Configurable Quotes in Business Central Without Buying a CPQ Platform

If you sell configurable products from Business Central, you know the internal push and pull: sales wants faster, accurate quotes, production wants BOMs and routings nobody has to hand-build, and finance wants both without a second system to reconcile. The common reflex is to shop for a standalone CPQ platform.

That reflex is worth a pause. A CPQ tool can be powerful on its own, but it arrives as a second login, a second data model, and an integration layer between the quote and the BOM. Product Configurator takes the opposite route and runs inside the Business Central sales quote or order itself.

What actually happens when you buy a standalone CPQ platform?

Buyer's guides put the timelines in the fine print. A focused mid-market rollout can run six to twelve weeks; a complex enterprise one, twelve to eighteen months. Most CPQ tools are system-agnostic, so every link back to your item master, costing, and routings gets built and maintained as a separate integration layer.

Can I keep a runaway configuration from becoming a support ticket?

The Advanced Rule Builder is where you encode the "you can't pick that" and "if they chose X, they need Y" logic: hiding incompatible options, forcing a required component, or deriving a quantity from a formula. Skip that layer and the mistake surfaces on the shop floor after the order is already released.

Does every configuration have to create a new item number?

No. When a team generates far more quotes than it closes, a permanent item record per quote piles up clutter you eventually clean up. The quoting item option keeps one base item number across many configurations, stores the specifics separately, and only mints a dedicated number once a quote becomes an order.

What does configuring a quote look like on the sales line?

A rep building a quote for a configurable desk opens the BOM Designer on the sales line, picks an item category, and sets the fields its owner defined: length, finish, drawer style. Change six feet to eight and the trim quantity recalculates. Product Configurator then builds the matching BOM and routing, and the item plans like any other.
