Why I Switched to Systeme.io for My SaaS Marketing Stack (And Saved $200/Month)

Running a bootstrapped SaaS is a constant battle between what you need and what you can afford. For the first year of my SaaS journey, I was paying for separate tools for email marketing, landing pages, course hosting, and affiliate management. It worked — but it was expensive, and the integrations were fragile.

Then I found Systeme.io, and my monthly expenses dropped by over $200. Here's a breakdown of what I was paying before, what I pay now, and why the switch made sense beyond just the cost.

The "Before" Stack: What I Was Paying

Like most indie hackers, I started by cobbling together best-of-breed tools. Here's what my monthly bill looked like:

Tool Purpose Monthly Cost
ConvertKit (Creator plan) Email marketing & automation $29/mo
Leadpages (Standard) Landing pages $49/mo
Teachable (Pro) Course hosting $59/mo
Tapfiliate (Starter) Affiliate management $59/mo
Calendly (Pro) Booking & scheduling $12/mo

Total: $208/month — and that's on the cheaper end. Some of these tools had usage limits that would have pushed me into higher tiers as I scaled.

Each tool also came with its own learning curve, its own login, its own support channel, and its own API quirks. When a new subscriber joined my email list, I had to make sure the webhook fired correctly to grant course access, and that the affiliate platform tracked the referral. It worked most of the time. "Most of the time" is not a phrase you want associated with your revenue pipeline.

The "After" Stack: All-in-One on Systeme.io

Systeme.io bundles all of these capabilities into one platform:

  • Email marketing with automation workflows, tags, and sequences
  • Landing page & website builder with conversion-optimized templates
  • Course hosting with drip schedules and student management
  • Affiliate management built directly into the platform
  • Sales funnels with upsells, downsells, and order bumps
  • Blog for content marketing
  • Evergreen webinars (on higher plans)

The free plan lets you get started with up to 2,000 contacts, 3 funnels, 1 blog, and 1 course — which is genuinely enough to validate an idea and get your first paying customers.

Here's the cost comparison at different stages:

Stage Old Stack Systeme.io Savings
Just starting (0-2K contacts) $208/mo $0/mo (Free) $208/mo
Growing (2K-5K contacts) $208-$250/mo $27/mo (Startup) $181-$223/mo
Scaling (5K-15K contacts) $250-$350/mo $47/mo (Webinar) $203-$303/mo

The savings compound. Over a year, that's $2,000-$3,600 that goes straight back into product development, ads, or simply staying in business longer.

It's Not Just About Money — It's About Friction

Cost savings alone wouldn't justify a switch if the platform was hard to use or missing critical features. Here's what surprised me:

1. The funnel builder is genuinely good. I expected a clunky drag-and-drop. Instead, I got a visual funnel editor where I can map out the entire customer journey — opt-in → sales page → order bump → upsell → thank you page — and connect each step to email automations. Building a complete funnel takes me about 2 hours instead of a full weekend.

2. Email deliverability is solid. I was nervous about leaving ConvertKit, which has a strong reputation for deliverability. After three months on Systeme.io, my open rates actually increased slightly (from 38% to 41%), likely because I could create more targeted segments and sequences natively without integration delays.

3. Course hosting is surprisingly robust. Teachable has a polished student experience, but Systeme.io's course builder supports drip content, completion tracking, certificates, and video hosting. For most SaaS founders running a course as a lead magnet or onboarding tool, it's more than enough.

4. The affiliate system is built-in. No more paying $59/month for Tapfiliate and praying the integration doesn't break during a product launch. Systeme.io tracks referrals natively, and you can set commission rates per product.

What You Lose (Honest Trade-offs)

I'm not going to pretend it's perfect. Here's what I gave up:

  • Deep analytics: Systeme.io's analytics are good for funnel-level metrics, but if you're used to the granularity of something like Amplitude or Mixpanel, you'll miss it. I supplement with a free PostHog instance.
  • Third-party integrations: The integration ecosystem is smaller than what you'd find with a tool like Zapier-connected platforms. Most essential integrations (Stripe, PayPal, Zapier itself) are available, but don't expect 500+ native integrations.
  • Design flexibility: The page builder is template-driven. You can customize extensively, but you won't get the pixel-level control of Webflow or custom HTML/CSS.

For a bootstrapped founder, these trade-offs are worth it. If your landing page design is your bottleneck, you probably have bigger problems.

My Recommendation

If you're spending more than $50/month across multiple marketing tools and you're pre-revenue or early-revenue, check out Systeme.io — start on the free plan, migrate one funnel, and see if it covers your needs before committing.

The switch took me about a weekend of work: rebuilding my opt-in funnel, migrating my email sequences, and importing my course content. The migration tools are decent, and the support team was responsive when I had questions.

I've now been on Systeme.io for eight months. My marketing stack costs $47/month instead of $208+. The funnels convert at the same rate. The automations fire reliably. And I spend my time building product instead of debugging integrations.

For a bootstrapped SaaS founder, that's the real ROI.
