I can agree entirely with the patience aspect. I stayed as a senior dev for 9 years because I loved the job. Then I changed jobs to take on a lead role. It lasted 3 months until we reorganized and promoted me to manager. Some periods may be short and others long. When I ultimately advanced it was to take on different challenges in growing a team and improving processes, not necessarily programming challenges
