A trick I've adopted is looking at what I'll do if I get accepted vs what I'll do if I get rejected. Prepping takes a lot of time - the equivalent of a decent project or a large article series.
It's still hard to wait and hard to get that rejection, but it helps temper it a little.
Agreed. I usually count about 1 hour of work per minute presented. If I'm submitting a completely new talk, I usually just write the outline and abstract for the CFP submission, and wait to prepare the actual talk until it's accepted somewhere.
