Motorola Launches Zapotec Keyboard: A Step Toward Digital Inclusion

Motorola has taken a bold leap toward cultural and digital inclusion with the launch of its first Zapotec keyboard, now available on Android devices. Introduced during an immersive event in Oaxaca, Mexico, the keyboard is part of the initiative “Lenguas Vivas” (Living Languages), which celebrates Indigenous voices through technology, art, and community.

Developed in collaboration with five Zapotec-speaking communities and guided by Professor Ambrocio Gutiérrez, the keyboard reflects authentic written forms of the language, not just a translation, but a tool made by and for the community.

As part of its global mission, Motorola has already supported languages like Cherokee, Māori, and Kaingang. Now, with Zapotec, it continues its commitment to making technology more inclusive.

The Motorola Indigenous Keyboard now supports five Zapotec variants:

  • Dixhsa (Teotitlán del Valle)
  • Yubdany Diza (San Bartolomé Quialana)
  • Dìzà (San Pablo Güilá)
  • Ditsa (San Miguel del Valle)
  • Diza (Santa Inés Yatzeche)
