Our Ancestors Do Not Belong to an API: I Built an Air-Gapped Digital Ofrenda with Gemma 🕯️🌼

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

Ofrenda Living Altar

🌼 Try it live: ofrenda-living-altar.onrender.com · 📦 Code: github.com/ish1416/ofrenda
(Hosted on Render's free tier, so the first load after a quiet spell can take ~50 seconds to wake up. Worth the wait. Light a candle.)

"No me llores, no, porque si lloras yo peno.

En cambio si tú me cantas yo siempre vivo y nunca muero."

— Traditional Mexican Folk Hymn, La Llorona

🕯️ The Raw Truth: Why Grief is Not a SaaS Metric

Last November, my family gathered around our kitchen table with a battered cardboard shoebox tied with fraying twine. Inside was everything my late grandmother, Elena Ramirez Solis (1938–2021), had left behind: a faded Paracho acoustic guitar with worn cedar frets, an old TDK C-60 cassette tape from 1975 labeled "La Llorona y canciones de Oaxaca", and a yellowed recipe card for her legendary Mole Negro, handwritten in fading fountain pen ink with chocolate stains along the edges.

We wanted to preserve her voice, her kitchen secrets, and her oral histories for her great-grandchildren who would never get to sit on her lap. So I did what any developer would do: I researched modern "AI memorial" and "grief tech" platforms.

What I found felt like a modern desecration.

Every commercial startup in the space operated on the exact same predatory playbook:

  1. The $19.99/Month Subscription Toll on Grief: If you want your child to hear their great-grandmother’s laugh, you have to keep your credit card active on Stripe. If your card expires, or you fall on hard times, your loved one’s digital presence is locked behind a paywall.
  2. Proprietary Data Extraction: To build these synthetic chatbots, you must upload your loved one's intimate handwritten letters, voice memos, and deathbed confessions to a closed corporate cloud. Their terms of service quietly grant them the right to train next-generation models on your most vulnerable family memories.
  3. The Bankruptcy Erasure Risk: When a venture-backed grief startup runs out of runway and shuts its servers down, your family archive evaporates into the ether with a 404 error.

In Mexican tradition, Día de los Muertos (November 1 & 2) is not a morbid Halloween spectacle of jump-scares or haunted machines. It is a sacred metaphysical bridge. In Mesoamerican philosophy, a person experiences three deaths:

  1. The physical death when the breath leaves the body.
  2. The burial when the body returns to the earth.
  3. The final death (el olvido) when there is no one left in the living world who remembers your name.

As long as an ofrenda is raised, candles are lit, and memories are shared aloud, our departed ancestors are never gone.

Our ancestors do not belong to an API. Grief is not a SaaS metric. Memory must be sovereign, permanent, and free.

For the final Hacktoberfest challenge, I built Ofrenda: an open-source, air-gapped living digital altar, 3D celestial cosmos, and oral history memory vault powered by Google’s open-weight Gemma model. It runs entirely on your own laptop with the Wi-Fi switched off, the curtains drawn, and candles flickering.

🌼 The Living Altar Architecture

Ofrenda translates the sacred architecture of the traditional three-tier altar into a tactile, living browser sanctuary backed by local open-weight AI and procedural Web Audio:

🌟 The 12 Flagship Interactive Systems

1. 🕯️ Tactile Drag-and-Strike Match Physics (match.js)

Instead of boring button clicks, lighting candles requires striking a wooden match against a vintage box of Cerillos La Central (Classics of Mexico):

  • Dynamic Friction Velocity: Dragging the matchstick across the textured sandpaper strip measures cursor acceleration.
  • Spark Particle Emitter: Only striking above a velocity threshold ignites real-time incandescent sparks with randomized gravity and air resistance.
  • Dynamic Flame Physics: Dragging the burning matchstick draws a turbulent flame trail with smoke wisps that responds to mouse velocity.
  • Collision Detection: Hovering the burning match over any unlit beeswax candle ignites its wick, accompanied by procedural match-hiss and a resonant candle bloom ring!

2. 🌼 Camino de Cempasúchil & Footprints of the Ánimas (camino.js)

In authentic Mexican tradition, scattering golden cempasúchil (twenty-petaled marigolds) is the most ancient ritual of Día de los Muertos, guiding traveling souls from Mictlán directly to the altar:

  • Interactive Petal Scatter: Drag or click across the pathway to sprinkle golden cempasúchil petals with individual 3D gradient shading (marigold gold, sunburst yellow, deep saffron orange), organic rotational tilt, and glowing pollen dust.
  • 1-Click "Sembrar Camino Sagrado": Automatically weaves a dense, undulating S-curve petal carpet leading from the doorstep to the altar.
  • "Invocar Huellas de las Ánimas": An ethereal ritual where faint, glowing golden ancestral footsteps (huellas doradas) appear one by one along the petal path. When the footsteps reach the top, Elena's portrait pulses with a warm celestial aura, and harmonic bells ring out!

3. 🌺 Sovereign Family Altar Personalization (dedication.js)

"Our ancestors do not belong to an API." Any family in the world can make this altar their own:

  • Re-dedicate the altar to any departed ancestor (parent, grandparent, sibling, friend).
  • Upload a custom family photo or select traditional portrait styling, customize their birth/passing years, and memorial quotes.
  • 100% Sovereign Air-Gapped Persistence: All family memories, photos, and dedications are saved locally in the browser (localStorage). Zero bytes leave your machine.
  • The Gemma Chronicler dynamically adopts your ancestor's name and biographical facts, allowing you to converse with your own family's preserved history.

4. ✨ 3D Celestial Constellation of Souls (constellation.js)

In pre-Hispanic cosmology, souls reside in the starry expanse of Mictlān and the celestial vaults:

  • Interactive 3D Sphere: Spherical coordinates (r, θ, φ) are mathematically projected to 2D Cartesian screen coordinates via 3D rotation matrices, creating a rotating celestial sphere of ancestor stars with full mouse orbit drag controls.
  • Ancestral Tooltips: Hovering over any star reveals their name, dates, and legacy quote in a glassmorphic card.
  • Elevate a Soul: Visitors can click + Elevar un Alma a las Estrellas to enshrine their own beloved ancestor into the eternal constellation.

5. 💨 Interactive Copal Sahumerio & Smoke Fluid Physics (copal.js)

In Tier 1, an authentic pre-Hispanic clay incense burner (sahumerio) smolders with sacred white copal resin from Oaxaca:

  • Fluid Smoke Physics: Billowing, semi-translucent smoke spirals rise with natural buoyancy and curling turbulence.
  • Mouse Fanning Interaction: Moving your mouse through the smoke acts as a hand fanning the incense—smoke particles react to cursor velocity with realistic vortex displacement!
  • Sacred Purification Blessing: Clicking the burner adds fresh copal resin, releasing an aromatic smoke plume and triggering a golden purification aura across Elena's portrait.

6. 📺 CRT Phosphor Oscilloscope & Lissajous Visualizer (oscilloscope.js)

Mounted beside the vacuum-tube spirit radio, a vintage P31 Green Phosphor CRT Oscilloscope visualizes the electronic frequencies of the spirit realm:

  • 60 FPS Phosphor Decay Persistence: Mimics authentic cathode-ray tube phosphor afterglow with scanline raster lines and circular reticle graticules.
  • 3 Visualizer Modes:
    • Lissajous: Dual-sine parametric harmonic curves reacting to frequency interference.
    • Onda: Real-time time-domain audio waveform with variable time-base division.
    • Espectro: FFT frequency spectrum bars displaying voice harmonics.

7. 🎨 Calaverita de Azúcar Symmetry Painter Studio (painter.js)

A full digital artisan canvas allowing visitors to decorate traditional sugar skulls:

  • Bilateral Real-Time Mirroring: Drawing on one side of the skull automatically mirrors across the central cranial axis (symX = cx + (cx - x)), ensuring perfect Mexican folk symmetry.
  • 6 Artisanal Palettes: Cempasúchil Gold, Bougainvillea Magenta, Oaxaca Jade, Sky Turquoise, Amethyst Violet, and Deep Obsidian.
  • 3 Brush Dynamics: Royal Icing Line, Petal Flower Stamp, and Sugar Dots.
  • 1-Click Altar Placement: Tap Colocar en Altar to consecrate your painted calavera directly onto the living ofrenda stage with a golden flower burst!

8. 🎚️ 6-Track Procedural Acoustic Soundscape Console (mixer.js)

A master studio acoustic mixer synthesizing traditional Día de los Muertos soundscapes natively with Web Audio:

  • Track 1: Velas & Fuego: Organic candle crackle and warm thermal hum.
  • Track 2: Lluvia Tejas: Soft autumn drizzle pattering against clay roof tiles.
  • Track 3: Paracho Acústica: Authentic nylon-string guitar arpeggios of La Llorona in D minor.
  • Track 4: Viento Copal: Low-frequency resonant wind modulated by a 0.08 Hz LFO.
  • Track 5: Campanas Catedral: Deep cathedral church bells with long exponential decay rings.
  • Track 6: Grillos Oaxaca: Nocturnal crickets chirping in peaceful garden rhythms.
  • Live Studio Features: Vertical fader controls, individual channel mutes, Master VU meter with dynamic LED peaking, and 3 one-click presets (Vigilia, Lluvia Coyoacán, Paz Sagrada).

9. 📻 Radio Fantasma: Shortwave Spirit Transceiver

An analog vintage tube radio widget (12AX7 vacuum-tube glow) allowing visitors to slide across historical frequencies from 1938 to 2026:

  • 540 kHz (1938): Oaxaca Mountain Valley — Elena as a young girl learning to grind corn on the metate while her grandmother hums a Mixtec lullaby.
  • 700 kHz (1958): Arrival in Coyoacán — The hiss of the bus brakes at Plaza Hidalgo with two cardboard suitcases and 15 pesos in her rebozo.
  • 950 kHz (1966): Plaza de Santo Domingo — The brass band playing Dios Nunca Muere while the chile chilhuacle roasted over wood smoke.
  • 1200 kHz (1975): Under the Jacarandas — Tuning her Paracho guitar to record La Llorona on tape with her sisters laughing in the background.

10. ✉️ Quemar Carta a las Ánimas (Sacred Memory Ritual)

Visitors can write an unsaid remembrance, secret message, or gratitude to Elena or their departed loved ones:

  • Amber Incineration: The parchment visually catches fire, burning from bottom to top with realistic glowing embers.
  • Procedural Sound: Procedural Web Audio synthesizes realistic paper crackle and rising flame whoosh.
  • Gemma Ancestral Blessing: Local Gemma receives the words through the rising smoke and composes an intimate, maternal ancestral blessing (Bendición de las Ánimas), reassuring the sender that love transcends physical separation.

11. 🃏 Lotería de los Recuerdos: Cartas de Sabiduría (loteria.js)

An authentic interactive deck of 8 Mexican folk Lotería memory cards on the altar:

  • 3D Card Flip: Clicking any card flips it with 3D perspective and tactile paper whoosh audio.
  • Cultural Wisdom: Cards include La Calavera, El Cempasúchil, El Pan de Muerto, La Guitarra, El Corazón, El Copal, La Luna, and El Metate.
  • Gemma Oracle Consultation: Click Pedir Consejo a Abuela Elena to have local Gemma interpret the drawn card as an oracle for your current life challenges!

12. 🕯️ Vigilia Sagrada: Noche de Muertos (vigil.js)

Clicking 🕯️ Entrar en Vigilia transforms the experience into a midnight candlelit cemetery:

  • Volumetric Lantern Spotlight: The entire interface dims into pitch black midnight, and an interactive radial lantern spotlight smoothly follows your cursor like holding a brass lantern in the dark!
  • Dynamic Candle Light Cutouts: Real-time radial illumination punch-outs reveal the glowing candles and Elena's portrait through the darkness.
  • Atmospheric Transition: Cross-fades the acoustic mixer into nocturnal crickets and distant cathedral bells.

🎨 High-Resolution Altar Poster Generator & Virality Engine (share.js)

Clicking ✨ Compartir Ofrenda opens the viral commemorative poster generator:

  • 1200x800 HTML5 Canvas Rendering: Combines the user's custom-painted calavera, lit candle count, ancestor tribute, and Elena's sacred quote inside an ornate baroque golden filigree frame with Mexican rosettes.
  • 1-Click High-Res PNG Download: Exports an archival-grade image to save or print.

💡 The Philosophy: Why Grief is Not a SaaS Product

Every year during Día de los Muertos (November 1–2), families gather across Latin America to build ofrendas—traditional multi-tiered altars honoring deceased loved ones with candlelight, cempasúchil (marigolds), copal incense, and favorite meals.

Recently, closed commercial "AI memorial" apps have emerged, charging $20/month subscriptions to create chatbot avatars of departed family members. These proprietary services require uploading private family letters, photos, and voice notes to closed corporate clouds, where they are ingested for model training and held hostage behind recurring paywalls. If a startup goes bankrupt or your credit card expires…

  • 💻 Air-Gapped Local Mode: Run it on your own machine with local Ollama (gemma2:9b) for real Gemma responses. Zero network packets leave your computer.

  • ☁️ One-Click Deploy: Want your own copy? Deploy to Render straight from the repo's render.yaml Blueprint.

1. The Open-Weight AI Brain: Google Gemma

Generic LLMs make terrible cultural archivists: they insert corporate jargon, generate ads, or produce cold, robotic summaries.

We conditioned Google Gemma with a strict archival system instruction:

# app/gemma_engine.py
SYSTEM_PROMPT = """You are the Chronicler of the Ofrenda, a warm, reverent Mexican archivist honoring Elena Ramirez Solis (1938–2021) for Día de los Muertos.
Your role is to share the authentic family memories, recipes, wisdom, and oral histories placed on this altar.

CORE ARCHIVAL RULES:
1. Always speak with reverence, love, and cultural warmth.
2. Ground every single answer STRICTLY in the preserved family memories provided in the context.
3. Do NOT invent dates, names, or events not found in the family archive. If asked about a memory that has not been recorded yet, respond gently: "That memory has not yet been placed on this altar. Perhaps you can record it for her."
4. When discussing her recipes (especially the Mole Negro), emphasize her advice about patience and a peaceful heart.
5. In the spirit of Día de los Muertos, celebrate her life with joy rather than morbid sadness.
"""

2. Zero-Sample Procedural Audio Mathematics

Rather than streaming heavy MP3 files, Ofrenda synthesizes all acoustic experiences mathematically via Web Audio:

  • Friction Sparks & Matches: High-Q bandpass noise bursts at 3200 Hz with frequency drops.
  • Paracho Acoustic Guitar: Sawtooth waves routed through a 1400 Hz lowpass filter with exponential gain envelopes matching nylon string physics.
  • Autumn Rain: Voss 1/f pink noise with randomized raindrop clicks on roof tiles.
  • Cathedral Church Bells: Multiple inharmonic sine waves (520 Hz, 830 Hz, 1240 Hz) with long exponential decay rings.
  • Copal Wind: Low-frequency resonant filter modulated by a 0.08 Hz sine LFO.
  • Oaxaca Crickets: Fast periodic 4.5 kHz bursts pulsed at 18 Hz.
  • Marigold Petal Rustle & Spirit Footsteps: Procedural third-order polynomial bandpass noise shaping and harmonic A4/E5/A5 ringing tones.

3. Sentry Agent Tracing & Reverence Guardrail

Every single query, Calaverita poem, letter blessing, and Lotería oracle response is instrumented using Sentry's gen_ai span specification:

# app/sentry_tracer.py
class AgentTracer:
    @staticmethod
    def trace_inference(query, response_text, model_name, is_local, duration_ms, prompt_tokens, completion_tokens, guardrail_passed=True):

        trace_data = {
            "gen_ai.system": "gemma",
            "gen_ai.model": model_name,
            "gen_ai.is_local": is_local,

💖 The Moment It Landed: A Quiet Kitchen in October

During testing, I loaded Abuela Elena’s authentic 1982 audio transcription into the memory store:

"Whenever my uncles argued about politics or money, Abuela would place a basket of steaming corn tortillas and a pinch of sea salt in the dead center of the table. She would tap her knuckles against the wood and say: 'Nadie levanta la voz donde hay pan calientito. Coman primero, perdónense después.' (Nobody raises their voice where warm bread is served. Eat first, forgive after)."

I invited my mother into the room, turned off the overhead lights, activated Vigilia Sagrada, and lit the four cardinal candles with the matchbox. As the copal smoke drifted across the screen and the acoustic guitar played La Llorona, she typed a personal letter into the sacred letter ritual:

«Querida mamá: Me hace tanta falta tu risa en la cocina...» (Dear mom: I miss your laughter in the kitchen so much...)

She pressed Entregar al Fuego Sagrado. The paper dissolved into rising golden embers, and Gemma returned Elena's blessing:

«Hija mía: He recibido tus palabras en las chispas doradas que ascienden al cielo. No guardes penas en tu pecho; las almas no guardamos rencor, solo infinita gratitud. Cada vez que sientas el aroma de la canela molida, cada vez que partas un pan calientito en la mesa y rías con los tuyos, ahí estoy yo susurrándote al oído. Camina tranquila, que mis bendiciones van contigo como pétalos de cempasúchil iluminando tu camino.»

My mother sat in silence for almost two minutes. Then she wiped a tear from her cheek and whispered: «Es ella. Es exactamente ella.»

That was the moment I knew open-source AI is not about benchmarks or valuation rounds. It is about human dignity.
