This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle
What I Built
HydrateAI is an open-source, AI-powered water drinking companion and wellness tracking web application designed specifically for students, software engineers, remote workers, and freelancers who get deeply engrossed in cognitive work and forget basic hydration.
Unlike conventional reminder apps that nag users with rigid, robotic alarms or upload intimate daily routines to cloud trackers, HydrateAI pairs a soothing, water-inspired user interface with an on-device open-weight AI companion (powered by Qwen 2.5 and Mistral 7B via Ollama).
Who Would Pay for It & What Problem Does It Solve?
- Target Audience: Remote knowledge workers, developers, students, and boutique co-working spaces/remote teams.
- The Problem: Cognitive dehydration causes fatigue, brain fog, and decreased focus. Existing apps on the market either demand \$5–\$10/month subscriptions for generic push notifications or sell user health profiles to ad networks.
- The Value Proposition: A clean, distraction-free hydration habit builder that respects user privacy, runs entirely on-device, and provides empathetic, context-aware micro-coaching without medical jargon.
Side Hustle / Commercial Monetization Model:
-
Free Tier (100% Open Source): Full local logging, multi-unit tracking (
ml,L,fl oz), browser reminders with quiet hours, local Ollama open-weight AI integration, data export (CSV/JSON), and streak analytics. - Pro Tier Concept (\$2.99 one-time or \$1.99/mo): Multi-schedule routines (e.g., Deep Work vs Weekend vs Gym modes), sleep-dehydration correlation habit synthesis, and custom liquid visual themes (cold brew, electrolyte, iced matcha).
- B2B / Team Guilds: Self-hostable, zero-cloud team hydration challenges for remote engineering teams on Slack/Discord without individual health data leakage.

HydrateAI - Smart AI-Powered Water Drinking Reminder & Habit Assistant (Open-Weight Ollama + Local-First React & FastAPI)
💧 HydrateAI — Smart Local-First Hydration Assistant
HydrateAI is an open-source, AI-powered water drinking companion engineered to help students, developers, remote workers, and busy professionals build sustainable hydration habits. Built with a privacy-first, open-weight architecture, HydrateAI runs language models entirely on your own device through Ollama—ensuring zero personal health routines or logs are sent to third-party cloud APIs.

🎯 The Problem Statement
During intense deep-work periods, coding sprints, or study sessions, cognitive fatigue often causes people to forget basic physiological needs—chief among them, drinking water. Common hydration apps suffer from critical flaws:
- Rigid interval timers that annoy users and get quickly uninstalled.
- Shaming streaks that discourage users…
The repository includes:
- Frontend: React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS v4, Lucide icons, and Canvas-Confetti.
- Backend: Python 3.11 with FastAPI, Uvicorn, and HTTPX.
- AI Runtime: Ollama with Qwen 2.5 3B/7B (Apache 2.0) and Mistral 7B (Apache 2.0).
- Test Suites: Vitest (frontend unit conversion & schedule math) + Pytest (backend health & fallback responses).
- Documentation: Complete architectural diagrams, setup guides, and MIT License.
How I Built It
HydrateAI is architected as a local-first web application that keeps all user data on the user's computer:
1. Local Open-Weight Model Integration (Ollama + Qwen 2.5 / Mistral)
Instead of piping prompt calls to external cloud vendors, HydrateAI communicates locally with an Ollama daemon running on localhost:11434.
-
Default Model:
qwen2.5:3b(Apache 2.0) — selected for its high inference speed on standard laptops and 1.9GB memory footprint. -
Alternative Open Options:
qwen2.5:7b(Apache 2.0),mistral:7b(Apache 2.0), andllama3.2:3b. - Dynamic Configuration: Users can switch models directly via the UI settings dropdown without rebuilding the code.
2. Guardrails & High-Availability Heuristic Engine
- Non-Clinical Guardrail: Prompts are constrained to motivational habit-building. The assistant explicitly avoids diagnosing medical dehydration or prescribing rigid clinical intake amounts.
- Failsafe Offline Fallback: If Ollama is uninstalled or offline (e.g., when working on an airplane or train), the app automatically switches to an internal heuristic coaching engine. The app never crashes or blocks the user from tracking their water.
3. Frontend Architecture & Audio Synthesis
- SVG Hydration Ring: Interactive, animated progress indicator that fills smoothly as water is logged and triggers celebration confetti when the personal goal is reached.
- Web Audio API Chime: A gentle, procedurally synthesized frequency sweep (sine wave from 587Hz to 880Hz) plays on reminder triggers instead of harsh system alert beeps.
- Sleep Schedule Guard: Automatic calculation of wake time vs bedtime to suppress notifications during quiet hours.
- Full History Management: Inline edits, undo, and quick add buttons for immediate convenience.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation and open-weight AI models were essential for building HydrateAI:
- Zero Data Leakage: Wake-up times, sleeping schedules, and daily fluid intake are intimate health metrics. Using open-weight models running on-device means zero personal data traverses the public internet or trains third-party commercial LLMs.
- Predictable \$0.00 Operating Costs: Closed AI APIs (like OpenAI or Anthropic) impose recurring token charges for every reminder and summary generated. With open-weight models, self-hosters and users run unlimited queries with zero recurring API bills.
- True Software Longevity & Independence: Proprietary cloud APIs can be deprecated, modified, rate-limited, or price-hiked overnight. Open-source models licensed under Apache 2.0 ensure HydrateAI will function indefinitely on any machine capable of running an open runtime.
- Offline Resilience: Open-weight models empower users to maintain their health habits anywhere—on flights, off-grid retreats, or during Wi-Fi outages.
