That $89 Amazon purchase could have been $1,200 in SPY/VOO.... I should have stop buying thing on Amazon to be on FIRE... SoI built Road to FIRE, a free open-source Chrome extension.
The idea is simple: before checkout, it shows the cart total as opportunity cost, like:
“This could be ~0.20 shares of VOO/SPY instead.”
I built it because my FIRE problem was not one huge purchase — it was a lot of “it’s only $40” moments adding up.
Privacy-wise:
- no account
- no tracking
- no backend
- no data collection
- everything stays in Chrome local storage
I’m looking for feedback from other builders:
- Is ETF-share framing useful or too gimmicky?
- Should I add modes like future value, hours of work, debt payoff, or emergency fund?
- Any UX/privacy concerns with this kind of extension?
Try 10 secs to install on Chrome Web Store!
