Nice article! For me personally I've only had one direct promotion in 8 years. Most of the time to move up I've had to change jobs entirely. I think that's fairly common in most lines of work nowadays though...

Changing jobs and moving up is definitely common, as is getting a raise, sometimes up to 20% or more when moving from one job to another. Sometimes you need to take control of your own destiny!
