A complete alternative to regular expressions would be Scripal.
It's fast (O1) and has a very intuitive syntax using short keywords.
Scripal can interpret numbers directly, uses templates, looks for files, knows comments.
It may compare phrases for similarity and much more.
The tool/library has a built-in debugger.
