Nestlé Pakistan Expands Clean Gilgit-Baltistan Project to Askole – Zero Point, Supporting Environmental Sustainability Near K2

Nestlé Pakistan is making significant strides in environmental sustainability with the expansion of its Clean Gilgit-Baltistan Project (CGBP) to Askole – Zero Point, a remote and ecologically sensitive settlement situated nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. This area serves as the last inhabited stop before mountaineers embark on the challenging ascent to K2, the world’s second-highest peak. The initiative aims to manage and recycle approximately 40,000 kilograms of plastic waste annually from the region, underscoring Nestlé’s commitment to a waste-free future.

Strategic Importance of Askole – Zero Point

Askole is a critical gateway to some of the highest peaks in the world, including the Baltoro and Biafo glaciers, which attract mountaineers and tourists alike. However, the influx of visitors and limited waste management infrastructure pose a significant threat to this fragile ecosystem. By extending the Clean Gilgit-Baltistan Project to this region, Nestlé Pakistan is addressing the urgent need for effective waste control measures in a place of both environmental and touristic importance.

Raja Nasir, Minister for Planning in the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, praised the initiative, saying, “We are delighted at Nestlé’s efforts for a waste-free future, in this fragile site Askole, that is close to important glaciers of Baltoro and Biafo, considered to be the gateway to some of world’s highest peaks and the launchpad for mountaineering expeditions.”

Innovative Waste Management Technology

As part of the expansion, Nestlé has donated a compressing and baling machine to the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP). This state-of-the-art machine will enable local authorities to efficiently compress different types of plastics and paper waste collected in the region. The compressed waste will then be transported downstream for recycling, in collaboration with the Gilgit Baltistan Waste Management Company (GBWMC).

Jason Avanceña, CEO of Nestlé Pakistan, highlighted the company's vision, stating, “We are accelerating our actions to reduce the environmental impact of various kinds of packaging waste. Our vision is that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfill nor in oceans, lakes and rivers.” He further added, “Tackling packaging waste requires collective action of leveraging public-private partnerships to find improved solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Achievements So Far and Future Goals

Since its inception, the Clean Gilgit-Baltistan Project has already made remarkable progress. Sheikh Waqar Ahmad, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability at Nestlé Pakistan, shared key milestones: “Earlier, as part of the CGBP, Nestlé installed three compressing and baling machines, one each in Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu, along with a sorting machine in collaboration with EPA-GB and GBWMC. In the last five years, these efforts culminated into waste management facilitation of over 6,800 tons of plastic packaging in the region, making a positive environmental impact.”

The initiative has also focused on community engagement and infrastructure development. Nestlé Pakistan has contributed to regional sustainability by installing 225 benches and over 100 waste bins made from recycled plastic across 16 tourist hotspots including Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Shigar, and Kharmang. Additionally, the company distributed 15,000 reusable bags among local communities to encourage eco-friendly practices.

Local Government Support

The expansion of the project to Askole – Zero Point was met with appreciation from local officials. Commissioner Baltistan, Kamal Khan, emphasized the significance of preserving the natural landscape and acknowledged Nestlé’s role: “We are thankful that Nestlé is playing a role in promoting a waste-free Gilgit-Baltistan.”

Other dignitaries present included Wali Ullah Fallahi, Deputy Commissioner Shigar, and senior representatives of CKNP and local administration, all underscoring the collaborative spirit necessary for the project’s success.

Contribution to Global Goals

This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production, and Goal 17 — Partnerships for the Goals. By improving waste management systems and fostering public-private partnerships, Nestlé Pakistan’s efforts in Gilgit-Baltistan contribute to building local environmental resilience in one of Pakistan’s most ecologically sensitive regions.

Why This Matters

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues worldwide, threatening ecosystems and biodiversity. In remote mountainous regions like Askole, the consequences can be particularly severe due to limited waste disposal options and the fragility of the natural environment. By introducing innovative technology and supporting waste collection and recycling, Nestlé Pakistan is helping to mitigate the negative impact of human activity in these vulnerable areas.

Moreover, such projects encourage sustainable tourism, ensuring that these breathtaking landscapes remain pristine for future generations while supporting the livelihoods of local communities through eco-conscious initiatives.

Conclusion

Nestlé Pakistan’s expansion of the Clean Gilgit-Baltistan Project to Askole – Zero Point demonstrates a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to environmental stewardship. By combining advanced waste management technology with strong local partnerships and community engagement, the project sets a commendable example for corporate responsibility in Pakistan and beyond.

This initiative not only preserves one of the world's most iconic natural sites but also reinforces the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling environmental challenges. As more organizations follow this lead, Pakistan moves closer to realizing a sustainable and waste-free future.
