When School Starts But Your Head Stays in the Game

School started Monday. Or it starts next Monday. Either way, your player is now supposed to focus on algebra while their body remembers the exact angle of last Saturday's strikeout call—the one they're still mad about.

This is where mental training stops being theoretical.

Fall ball doesn't pause for midterms. Tryouts happen during the week teachers assign projects. Your player will sit in class replaying a missed cutoff throw instead of taking notes. You'll find yourself managing not just a schedule, but two competing identities: the student and the athlete, both demanding 100%.

The real skill isn't choosing between them. It's compartmentalizing—genuinely focusing on math class without the baseball guilt, then stepping into the batter's box without the chemistry test creeping in.

It's your player learning to trust their preparation enough to let go of yesterday's bad call. It's you, the parent, staying calm in the car ride home after a rough game instead of rehashing every inning, so they can actually think about homework.

For the next four months, you'll both be holding two calendars. Mental toughness is learning to read only one at a time.
