The Parent Meeting Is Forty Minutes Long and Nobody Says the Words Mental Toughness
The email said thirty minutes. It said thirty minutes the way a sports psychologist says "let's talk about resilience." The fall roster went out Sunday, so now there is a meeting, in the back room of a pizza place, with a folding table and a projector nobody is going to use. You arrive at 6:52 for a 7:00 start and you are the fourth person there. The other three were also early. All four of you are looking at your phones instead of at the laminated schedule sitting face-down in the middle of the table.
What you're really doing is managing anxiety. Your kid went 0-for-4 last weekend. Another parent's kid made an error that lost the game. Nobody wants to ask the coach directly about expectations, so instead you all sit in the fluorescent glow, scrolling, waiting for someone else to speak first.
The coach will eventually talk about "the process" and "trusting the work." What he means is: your player's confidence will take hits. So will yours. The mental game starts here—in this room, in how you frame what comes next, in whether you can sit with uncertainty without filling the silence.
