As an update to this - my page speed scores on the new home page were 92 until I added my Google Tag Manager scripts back in. Then they went to 28 :(
After messing around with them for a while, I've got the page speed at 55, but it's worth noting that Google Tag Manager scripts can REALLY kill your page speed scores.
Totally - changing the load event timing made a pretty big difference, and I'm still working on removing tags that aren't totally necessary. Once I nail that down I'll post about it.

Have you tried diminishing the amount of tags that show up before initial page load/pushing them after?
AKA after 'window loaded' and DOM ready? Or async with the scripts?

Sometimes GTM gets bloated, and the best we can really do is prune things. Good luck, looking forward to the post about it :)
