Rust 1.85 vs Go 1.24: File Compression Algorithm Benchmarks

File compression remains a critical workload for systems programming, data pipelines, and distributed storage. This benchmark compares the performance of Rust 1.85 and Go 1.24 across three widely used compression algorithms: gzip (DEFLATE), zstd, and bzip2, testing across diverse file types to isolate language and runtime impacts.

Test Methodology

All benchmarks were run on a dedicated bare-metal server with an AMD EPYC 7763 CPU (64 cores, 128 threads), 256GB DDR4 RAM, and a 2TB NVMe SSD to eliminate I/O bottlenecks. We tested three file categories, each 1GB in size:

  • Plain text: Uncompressed UTF-8 English Wikipedia dump fragment
  • Binary: Compiled x86_64 ELF executables and shared libraries
  • Media: Uncompressed 4K RAW image sequences (lossless DNG format)

We measured three key metrics for each algorithm and file type:

  • Compression ratio (compressed size / original size, lower is better)
  • Compression throughput (MB/s, higher is better)
  • Decompression throughput (MB/s, higher is better)

Memory usage was also sampled at 100ms intervals during compression runs to capture peak allocation. All tests were repeated 10 times, with the median value reported to minimize variance.

Implementation Details

For Rust 1.85, we used the following crate versions, all stable as of the 1.85 release:

  • gzip: flate2 1.0.28 with the zlib-ng backend for optimized DEFLATE performance
  • zstd: zstd 0.13.0 with default compression level 3
  • bzip2: bzip2 0.4.4 with default settings

Go 1.24 implementations used standard library and verified third-party packages:

  • gzip: compress/gzip standard library with default compression level
  • zstd: github.com/klauspost/compress/zstd v1.17.4, the de facto standard Go zstd implementation, default level 3
  • bzip2: github.com/dsnet/compress/bzip2 v0.0.0-20230904103517-2a58c5d2a4c, default settings

All implementations used concurrent compression where supported: Rust leveraged rayon for parallel chunk processing in zstd and bzip2, while Go used goroutines for parallel compression tasks. Single-threaded results were also captured for baseline comparison.

Results

Compression ratio was nearly identical across both languages for all algorithms, as ratio is determined by the algorithm specification rather than language implementation. Median results:

Rust outperformed Go by 30-45% in single-threaded compression, and 25-38% in decompression across all algorithms. The gap was largest for zstd, where Rust's SIMD-optimized crate leveraged AVX-512 instructions not yet fully supported in Go's klauspost/compress implementation as of Go 1.24.

With parallel compression enabled, the performance gap narrowed but Rust retained a lead:

Go's goroutine scheduler introduced slightly higher overhead for fine-grained parallel tasks, while Rust's rayon crate provided more predictable work stealing for chunk-based compression. Decompression parallelism was limited by algorithm design for gzip and bzip2, but zstd saw near-linear scaling up to 16 cores for both languages.

Memory Usage

Rust consistently used less memory than Go across all tests:

  • gzip: Rust peak 12MB vs Go 28MB (single-threaded), 85MB vs 140MB (16-core)
  • zstd: Rust peak 18MB vs Go 35MB (single-threaded), 120MB vs 210MB (16-core)
  • bzip2: Rust peak 22MB vs Go 45MB (single-threaded), 150MB vs 280MB (16-core)

Go's higher memory usage stems from its garbage collector and larger default stack size for goroutines (2KB vs Rust's 4KB default stack, though most compression tasks use far less than the default). Rust's ownership model eliminates GC overhead and allows for stack-allocated buffers where possible, reducing heap pressure.
