Why CRDTs Over Operational Transformation?
Linear 1.x used Operational Transformation (OT) for real-time state sync, but we migrated to Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) for Linear 2.0 after benchmarking both approaches across 10,000 teams. OT requires a centralized transformation server to order operations, which added 120ms of latency for cross-region teams and caused 8% of operations to fail during region outages. CRDTs, by contrast, allow any node to merge mutations without coordination, eliminating the centralized bottleneck. CRDT State Store Tradeoffs
The ProjectState CRDT uses a last-write-wins (LWW) strategy for task metadata, which is sufficient for 98% of project workflow use cases. LWW is simple to implement and merge, with O(1) merge time for individual tasks. For edge cases where LWW is insufficient (e.g., appending to a task's comment thread), we use a grow-only set (GSet) CRDT for the comment list. We considered using a more complex CRDT like a Replicated Growable Array (RGA) for comments, but the overhead wasn't justified: only 12% of tasks have more than 5 comments, and GSet covers 99% of comment use cases. The version vector implementation uses per-node counters instead of hybrid logical clocks (HLC) for simplicity, but we plan to migrate to HLC in Linear 2.1 for teams with more than 100 edge nodes. Edge Validator Deployment Strategy
Linear 2.0's edge validators are deployed on AWS Local Zones and Cloudflare Workers, giving us 32 points of presence within 50ms of 92% of the world's engineering teams. We chose to run validators on the edge instead of in the core tier to reduce latency: a mutation that would take 210ms to validate in the core tier takes 89ms at the edge, a 58% improvement. The downside is higher operational complexity: we have to deploy updates to 32 regions instead of 3 core regions, and edge nodes have less memory and CPU than core nodes. To mitigate this, the EdgeWorkflowValidator is designed to use less than 128MB of memory and 0.5 vCPU per 10,000 mutations per second. We use canary deployments for edge validators: 5% of traffic goes to the new version for 1 hour before rolling out to all regions, which has reduced validator-related outages by 73% since launch.

Benchmark Methodology
All benchmarks cited in this article were run on AWS c7g.4xlarge instances (16 vCPU, 32GB RAM) across 3 regions (us-east-1, eu-west-1, ap-southeast-1). We simulated 10,000 teams with 10 engineers each, generating 5,000 mutations per second per team. Mutations were a mix of task status updates (70%), task creation (20%), and workflow changes (10%). We measured throughput (writes/sec), latency (p50, p99, p999), consistency (percentage of nodes with matching state after 1 minute of mutation), and cost (AWS bill per 10 engineers).
