Adalo vs Notion: A Head-to-Head Comparison After Building With Both

When evaluating no-code tools, Adalo and Notion often come up in conversation—but they serve very different purposes. To cut through the marketing fluff, we built an identical event management tool with both platforms to test their limits, ease of use, and real-world performance. Here’s what we found.

What is Adalo?

Adalo is a no-code app development platform designed to help non-technical users build custom mobile and web applications. It uses a drag-and-drop interface with pre-built components (buttons, forms, lists, maps) and a built-in database to structure app data. You can add user authentication, push notifications, and integrate with third-party tools via APIs or Zapier. Adalo apps can be published to the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and as responsive web apps.

What is Notion?

Notion is an all-in-one workspace tool that combines notes, documents, spreadsheets, and databases into a single block-based interface. While it’s not a dedicated app builder, its database functionality, relations, rollups, and recent additions like Notion Sites and buttons allow users to build lightweight internal tools, client portals, and simple web apps. Notion is primarily web-based, with mobile apps that mirror the web experience rather than offering native app functionality.

Head-to-Head Comparison

We evaluated both platforms across six key categories to help you decide which fits your needs:

1. Primary Use Cases

Adalo is built for teams that need custom, user-facing mobile or web apps with native functionality: think customer portals, booking apps, social networks, or e-commerce stores. Notion shines for internal use cases: team wikis, project management dashboards, content calendars, and simple data tracking tools. It’s rarely the right choice for customer-facing apps that require a branded, native experience.

2. Ease of Use

Notion has a far lower learning curve for basic use cases. Most users can pick up its block-based editor and database functionality in a few hours. Adalo requires more upfront time investment: you’ll need to learn how to structure databases, link screens, and configure logic for even simple apps. However, Adalo’s interface is more intuitive for app-specific design than Notion’s general-purpose workspace.

3. Core Features

  • Adalo offers native mobile app components, push notifications, custom domain support, user authentication, role-based access, and a marketplace of pre-built templates and integrations. Its database is app-focused, with easy linking between collections (e.g., users to orders).
  • Notion includes rich text editing, relational databases, rollup and formula fields, Notion AI, collaborative editing, and Notion Sites for publishing databases as simple web pages. It lacks native mobile app functionality, push notifications, and advanced user auth for external users.

4. Pricing

Adalo’s free tier limits you to 1 app with Adalo branding and 100 records. Paid plans start at $36/month (billed annually) for the Starter plan, which removes branding, increases record limits, and adds custom fonts. The Professional plan ($52/month annual) adds advanced integrations and user roles.

Notion’s free plan is far more generous for personal use, with unlimited pages and blocks. Paid plans start at $10/user/month for the Plus plan (team features, 30-day page history), with the Business plan at $18/user/month adding advanced permissions and SSO. Enterprise plans are custom.

5. Performance

Adalo apps are optimized for mobile performance: they load quickly, support offline mode for basic functionality, and feel like native apps to end users. Notion is web-first, so complex databases with thousands of records can lag, and mobile apps offer limited offline access. Notion Sites load slower than Adalo web apps, especially for data-heavy pages.

6. Customization

Adalo gives you full control over app UI: you can adjust spacing, colors, fonts, and component behavior to match your brand. Notion’s customization is limited to its block system: you can change database views (table, board, calendar) and add icons/covers, but you can’t adjust core layout or add custom interactive elements beyond buttons and forms.

Our Build Test: Event Management Tool

To put both platforms to the test, we built a simple event management tool that tracks events, attendee registrations, and check-ins. Here’s how the builds stacked up:

  • Adalo build time: 6 hours. The final product was a native mobile app and responsive web app with user login, event browsing, one-click registration, and push notifications for event reminders. We published it to the web in 10 minutes.
  • Notion build time: 2 hours. The final product was a web-based dashboard with a database of events, a registration form, and a check-in table. We published it via Notion Sites in 2 minutes, but it had no mobile app, no push notifications, and required users to log in to Notion to access it.

Pros and Cons

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Adalo if you need a custom, branded mobile or web app for external users with native features like push notifications or offline access. Choose Notion if you need an internal tool, wiki, or simple data tracker that your team can collaborate on in real time. For most teams, the two tools complement each other rather than compete: use Notion for internal operations, and Adalo for customer-facing apps.
