A lot of founders obsess over the AI bill after it lands.
That is too late.
If you only see token spend at the end of the month, you are not managing usage. You are managing regret. The number may be small enough to ignore once, then large enough to sting later, and by then the behavior that caused it has already repeated a hundred times.
That is why I built TokenBar.
I wanted a tiny Mac menu bar app that makes the cost visible while the work is happening. Not after the fact. Right there, in the loop, when the prompt is still being written and the next model call is still optional.
The lesson is bigger than AI.
Most expensive problems are not expensive because they are rare. They are expensive because the feedback loop is too slow.
- If a tool is burning money, show the cost sooner.
- If attention is leaking, remove the temptation sooner.
- If shipping is drifting, make progress visible sooner.
That is the whole thesis behind TokenBar.
It is not trying to be a giant AI dashboard. It is trying to do one job well: keep the cost of using AI obvious enough that you can make better decisions in real time.
If you have ever opened an AI invoice and felt that little founder gut drop, you probably do not need a lecture on budgeting. You need a faster feedback loop.
