Introducing Minoo: A Living Map of Indigenous Community

Ahnii!

Minoo is a platform that connects Indigenous communities, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and volunteers across northern Ontario. This post covers what Minoo is, why it exists, and how you can help shape it before launch.

What Minoo Does

Minoo is a location-aware community platform. Set your community and it shows you what's nearby: people, events, Teachings, and groups. The name comes from the Anishinaabemowin word for "good."

The platform has four main areas:

  • Communities — Browse nearby communities like Sagamok Anishnawbek, Whitefish River, Espanola, and others in the region
  • People — Find Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and language speakers in your area
  • Events — Discover powwows, gatherings, ceremonies, and community programs
  • Teachings — Explore culture, history, and language knowledge passed down through generations

The Elder Support Program

The Elder Support Program is designed to connect Elders who need help with everyday tasks to volunteers in their community. The platform supports the full flow, but the program isn't active yet. It needs a community coordinator in Sagamok to get it off the ground.

Here's how it will work:

  1. An Elder (or someone on their behalf) submits a request for help with rides, groceries, yard work, or a visit
  2. A community coordinator reviews the request and matches them with a nearby volunteer
  3. The volunteer reaches out to arrange the details
  4. The coordinator follows up to make sure everything went well

Family members and community workers can submit requests on behalf of an Elder with their permission. The coordinator layer keeps it personal and accountable. If you're in Sagamok or the surrounding area and want to help get this program running, reach out.

Community Values Built In

Minoo is not a corporate product. A few things that reflect that:

  • Data sovereignty — Community data stays under community control. There's a dedicated data sovereignty page that explains the approach.
  • Creative Commons licensing — Community content is shared under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, so it can't be commercialized without permission.
  • Coordinator-mediated — Volunteers don't just show up. A community coordinator who knows the area and the people handles the matching.
  • Accessibility — The site includes skip navigation, semantic HTML, and an accessibility statement.

Where Minoo Is Now

The site is live at minoo.live and the foundation is in place. Communities in the Espanola area are represented, the Elder Support flow works end to end, and the location-aware search is functional.

But it's early. Content is thin in most areas, and the platform needs real community input to grow.

How You Can Help

Honest feedback before launch would be valuable. Specifically:

  • Does the content feel right? What's missing from the communities, events, or Teachings sections?
  • Is the volunteer and Elder support flow clear? Could you walk an Elder through the request process?
  • Does this feel like something your community would use? What would make it more useful?

Nothing is set in stone. This is the stage where feedback actually shapes what gets built.

If you have thoughts, visit minoo.live and drop a comment or send me a message. Miigwech.
