How to Make a Bootable Windows 11 USB Flash Drive: 3 Methods Compared

Creating a Windows 11 installer USB is one of those skills every PC user needs sooner or later. There are three solid ways to do it, and the best one depends on your situation.

1. Media Creation Tool (official, easiest)

Microsoft's own tool does everything: download it from the official Windows 11 download page, run it, pick "USB flash drive," select your stick, and wait. It downloads Windows 11 and builds a UEFI/GPT-compatible drive automatically. It uses a compressed install.esd (under 4 GB), so everything fits on a single FAT32 partition and Secure Boot stays happy.

2. Rufus (most flexible)

Rufus is a tiny portable app that gives you full control. Select your ISO, set the partition scheme to GPT with target system UEFI (non CSM), and hit START. Its killer feature is the "Windows User Experience" dialog: you can bypass the TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and 4 GB RAM requirements — genuinely useful for older laptops. Rufus also handles the classic >4 GB install.wim problem automatically by splitting it into .swm chunks or pairing an NTFS data partition with a small UEFI:NTFS bootloader partition.

Something I verified in my own lab: splitting a 5 GB file into chunks and rejoining it produces a bit-identical file (matching MD5 hashes) — the same principle behind install.wim splitting. I documented the test with screenshots in the full Indonesian guide: Cara Membuat Flashdisk Bootable Windows 11.

3. Ventoy (one stick, many ISOs)

Install Ventoy once, then just drag-and-drop ISO files onto the drive. At boot you get a menu to pick which ISO to launch. Perfect for technicians. One caveat: some picky UEFI firmware rejects Ventoy's bootloader with Secure Boot on — disable Secure Boot temporarily if that happens.

Booting from the stick

Plug it in, power on, and hammer the boot-menu key before the Windows logo appears: F12 on Dell/Lenovo/Acer, Esc then F9 on HP, Esc on ASUS, F11 on MSI. Pick the entry labeled "UEFI:" and press Enter.

Bottom line: Media Creation Tool for simplicity, Rufus for control and requirement bypasses, Ventoy for multi-ISO convenience.
