Documents Required to Sell a Car in Ahmedabad (The Full Checklist)

There is nothing worse than standing in line at the Subhash Bridge or Vastral RTO for two hours, only to reach the window and hear: “Tamara photo ma sahi nathi” (Your signature is missing on the photo) or “Affidavit kyay che?” (Where is the affidavit?).
In Ahmedabad, selling a car isn’t just about handing over the keys. It’s about handing over a very specific set of legal documents. If even one paper is missing or expired, the ownership transfer (RC Transfer) will stall. And remember: until the RC is transferred, you are legally liable for that car.
At Kamdhenu Cars, we handle this paperwork daily for our customers. But if you are planning to sell privately, or just want to double-check your file, this is the ultimate checklist of documents required to sell a car in Ahmedabad in 2026.
The “Must-Have” Originals
Before you even print the RTO forms, ensure you have these four original documents in your glovebox. Without them, the sale cannot legally proceed.

  1. Original Registration Certificate (RC) The Rule: You need the original Smart Card. A photocopy or a Digilocker screenshot is not enough for the final RTO submission. Common Issue: If your RC is broken, faded, or lost, you must apply for a duplicate RC (Form 26) before you can sell the car. Kamdhenu Tip: Check if the address on your RC matches your current ID proof. If not, it’s fine for selling, but the buyer’s address proof must be current.
  2. Valid Insurance Policy The Rule: The car must have valid insurance (at least Third-Party) on the date of transfer. Why: The RTO will reject the transfer application if the policy is expired. Solution: If your policy has expired, buy a basic Third-Party Liability policy online just to facilitate the transfer. It’s a small cost to save the deal.
  3. Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate The Rule: Must be valid on the date of submission. Cost: Rs. 50–100 at any petrol pump in Ahmedabad. Note: Ensure the registration number on the PUC matches the RC exactly.
  4. Owner’s ID & Address Proof You (the seller) need to provide self-attested copies of: Pan Card: Mandatory. If you don’t have one, you need Form 60. Address Proof: Aadhar Card, Passport, or Voter ID. Passport Size Photos: Keep 4 recent photos ready. The RTO Forms (The Heart of the Transfer) These are the standard Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) forms. You can download them from the Parivahan website or buy them at any Xerox shop near the RTO. Form 29 (Notice of Transfer) What it is: This is you telling the RTO, “I have sold this car to this person.” Quantity: 2 Copies. Signature: Signed by the Seller. Form 30 (Report of Transfer) What it is: This is the application to actually change the name on the RC card. Quantity: 1 Copy. Signature: Signed by both Buyer and Seller. Warning: Never sign blank Forms 29/30 and hand them to a broker. Always fill in the buyer’s details first to prevent fraud. The “Ahmedabad Special” Documents This is where generic advice fails. In Gujarat RTOs (GJ-01, GJ-27), officials often ask for extra security documents to prevent theft and fraud.
  5. The Seller Affidavit (Consent Letter) What it is: A declaration on Rs. 50 or Rs. 100 stamp paper, notarized by a lawyer. What it says: It states that you (the seller) have sold the vehicle voluntarily, have received full payment, and are not under any pressure. Why it’s needed: To protect the buyer and the RTO from future claims where a seller might say, “I never sold that car, it was stolen.”
  6. Traffic Challan Clearance The Rule: If your car has pending e-challans (for speeding on SG Highway or wrong parking), the RTO system will block the transfer. Action: Check the Parivahan or Gujarat Traffic Police app. Pay any pending fines before listing the car. Special Cases (Loans & CNG) If your car falls into these categories, you need extra papers. Scenario A: The Car Has (or Had) a Loan If your RC has the words “Hypothecated to [Bank Name]” printed on it, you cannot sell the car without clearing this. Even if you paid off the loan 5 years ago, the RTO doesn’t know that yet. Required Document: Bank NOC (No Objection Certificate) and Form 35 (Notice of Termination of Hypothecation). Process: Submit Form 35 + Bank NOC + Original RC to the RTO to get “Hypothecation Cancelled.” Only then can you transfer ownership. Scenario B: The Car Has a CNG Kit Required Document: Valid Hydrotest Certificate. The Rule: The CNG cylinder must be tested every 3 years. If the compliance plate is expired, the RTO will refuse the transfer until a new test is done. The “Safe Sale” Packet These aren’t for the RTO, but for your safety as a seller. Keep these in your personal file forever. Delivery Note: A signed receipt stating the date and time the buyer took possession of the car. Buyer’s ID Copy: Never hand over the keys without taking a photo of the buyer’s Aadhar/Driving License. Payment Proof: A copy of the DD, Cheque, or bank transfer reference number. Summary Checklist: What to Carry to the RTO Document Quantity Purpose Original RC 1 Surrender for new card Form 29 2 Notice of sale Form 30 1 Application for transfer Insurance Copy 1 Valid proof PUC Copy 1 Emission proof Seller Aadhar/Pan 1 each KYC Buyer Aadhar/Pan 1 each KYC Photos 2-4 For Forms Chassis Print 1 Pencil trace of chassis no. Yes. The RTO requires the original smart card RC. Photocopies or DigiLocker versions aren’t accepted for final transfer.

No. The transfer will be rejected. At minimum, valid third-party insurance is required on the transfer date.
