When people talk about supporting open source, the conversation often goes straight to funding. Funding matters, but I don't think it is the only thing that makes someone keep going.
Sometimes a project needs its first few users. Often the project needs dogfooding or a third party to just try it out and figure the issues
That also means asking what the project needs before offering whatever happens to be easiest for us. More attention is not always helpful if the maintainer is already struggling to respond to issues. More contributors might not help if nobody has time to review their work.
For people maintaining a project outside their main job, what would make the biggest difference right now?
Would it be funding, users, documentation help, testing, someone to share the maintenance, or something else? I'd be interested in a concrete example of support you received that was genuinely useful.
