Doing the small tasks, and playing the long ones

Doing the small tasks, and playing the long ones

There are two kinds of thing people do with an hour, and they are opposites in a way that is easy to miss.

One of them is collecting: a small task, done, and you get something back for it. The other is something you sit down to and stay with for the whole hour, and the result is not a small thing at all.

Both work. They fail for different reasons, and the failure modes look similar from the outside.

Collecting

Small tasks have a specific advantage: they are legible. You can see whether you did them, and the reward arrives immediately, which is exactly what makes them satisfying.

The failure is that the legibility is what makes them tempting to replace real work with. An afternoon of small tasks is an afternoon where nothing accumulated.

Hub is built around that loop: you record short activities, each one is a task you complete for a profile, and the platform shows what is available for you. It is at https://hubdata.win.

Staying with one thing

The other kind has the opposite property. It is not legible while you are doing it, the reward arrives much later, and there is no natural way to show progress halfway through.

Which is why the second kind tends to get replaced by the first, even when it is the one that mattered.

There is also a third one, which is neither: something you watch end to end, with a beginning and an ending, and the only job you have is to be there. A player for a series is the plainest example, and the reason a player like the one at https://youtube.kyaneko.com works is that it removes the decision.

Why the two interfere

They compete for the same hour and they pay out on different timescales, so the one that pays out sooner wins by default.

Knowing that is most of the battle. The fix is not discipline, it is scheduling: put the collecting in the slot where you want the small win, and protect the long hour like an appointment with somebody, because nobody is going to remind you.

That is the whole thing. Two kinds of hour, and the one that pays out later needs a calendar entry, not willpower.
