What is Cyber Security? Types, Importance

Cyber security is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and data from digital attacks, unauthorized access, or damage. It plays a crucial role in safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring the integrity of IT infrastructure. With the rise in cloud computing, remote work, and Internet of Things (IoT), cyber threats like ransomware, phishing, and malware have become more sophisticated, making cyber security a top priority for businesses and individuals alike.

There are several types of cyber security:

Network Security – focuses on protecting internal networks from intrusions using firewalls, anti-virus software, and secure gateways.
Information Security – ensures data confidentiality, integrity, and availability through encryption and secure data storage.
Application Security – protects software and apps from vulnerabilities by applying secure coding practices and regular updates.
Cloud Security – defends cloud-based systems and data with identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and compliance monitoring.
Endpoint Security – secures end-user devices like laptops and smartphones with tools like anti-malware and device management solutions.
Operational Security (OpSec) – manages how data is handled, including permissions and user access levels.
The importance of cyber security lies in its ability to protect against data breaches, maintain customer trust, ensure business continuity, and meet compliance requirements like GDPR and HIPAA.
