I started treating helmet lights like unit tests after one too many dusk rides where drivers "didn't see me."
Checklist I actually run
- Front white / rear red — both USB, both charged Sunday night
- Beam angle — point front light slightly down; blinding cars is not visibility
- Spare band — lives in my bag, not "I'll remember tomorrow"
- Rain mode — if reflectors are dirty, clean them before relying on them
Assumptions
- Urban commute 6–12 km one way
- Mixed bike lanes + shared paths
- I dismount at crowded crosswalks (separate habit)
If you only fix one thing: rear blink pattern beats a brighter front flood for side streets.
Disclosure: I ride Kingsong wheels; link below is gear I reference, not sponsored.
