How to Recover from a Google Algorithm Update Without Panicking
A sudden traffic drop after a confirmed Google update triggers an understandable panic response: change everything, fast. That's usually the wrong move, and it often makes diagnosis harder, not easier.
✅ Confirm It's Actually the Update
Check Search Console's performance report against the update's confirmed rollout dates before assuming causation. Seasonal dips, a broken sitemap, or an accidental noindex tag from a recent deploy can look identical to algorithm impact and need a completely different fix.
🔬 Identify Which Pages Actually Dropped
Algorithm updates rarely hit a whole site uniformly — usually a specific content type or quality tier takes the hit. Segmenting by page type or publish date in Search Console often reveals the update targeted something specific (thin content, AI-generated pages, aggressive affiliate linking) that points directly at the fix.
🛑 Resist the Urge to Overcorrect Everything
Rewriting your entire site's content in a panic, based on guesses about what the update targeted, often does more damage than the update itself. Fix the specific pattern identified, wait for the next data cycle, then iterate — not a wholesale rewrite on day one.
