yes to the "other valued skills" part! in considering career goals, i knew i didn't want to into "pure" management - i wanted to stay technical. at the same time, i do have strong skills in leading, speaking, and coaching. i see a software architect as a way i can advance in my craft using both my technical and non-technical skills.
