RepoRevenant 👻 — The Ghost of Forgotten Code
Every repository has a past. Every commit leaves a trace. Every forgotten file has a story.
This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine
What I Built
RepoRevenant is an AI-powered developer tool that brings forgotten, abandoned, and difficult-to-understand codebases back to life.
Every developer has probably encountered an old project filled with confusing folders, unused components, forgotten functions, outdated dependencies, and Git commits whose purpose is no longer clear.
Understanding such projects manually can be frustrating and time-consuming.
That's where RepoRevenant comes in.
It acts like a digital ghost that explores a repository, uncovers its history, and helps developers understand what is happening inside their code.
Key Features
- Repository Scanner: Scans local repositories and identifies programming languages, files, folders, and project structures.
- AI-Powered Code Understanding: Explains source files, functions, components, and project architecture.
- Forgotten Code Detection: Identifies potentially unused files, unreferenced components, TODO comments, and suspiciously neglected code.
- Git History Explorer: Explores commits, authors, timestamps, branches, and changes to understand how a project evolved.
- Ask the Ghost: A repository-aware AI assistant that answers questions about the selected codebase.
- Ghost Story Mode: Generates spooky fictional narratives inspired by actual repository information and forgotten code.
- Repository Health Report: Provides insights into project structure, documentation, Git activity, and potential maintenance concerns.
- Local AI Integration: Uses Ollama and open-weight models for locally powered AI analysis.
How I Interpreted the Theme
The theme Ghost in the Machine inspired me to explore a different kind of haunting.
Instead of traditional ghosts, I thought about forgotten codebases.
Projects that developers once worked hard on eventually become abandoned. Their creators move on, documentation gets outdated, and important pieces of code are forgotten.
But the code remains.
I wanted to build something that could explore these forgotten digital spaces and help developers rediscover what was left behind.
RepoRevenant is my interpretation of a ghost that remembers what developers have forgotten.
Demo
GitHub Repository: https://github.com/codexxxx07/RepoRevenant_MLH_Week_4
The project is developed as a desktop application using React, Tauri, and local AI integration.
The demo will showcase:
- Selecting and scanning a local repository.
- Exploring the project structure.
- Analysing code with local AI.
- Exploring Git history.
- Asking the Ghost questions about the repository.
- Generating a spooky repository story.
How I Built It
RepoRevenant combines desktop application development, repository analysis, Git integration, and open-source AI.
Technology Stack
Frontend
- React
- Vite
- Tailwind CSS
- JavaScript ES6+
- React Router DOM
- Lucide React
Desktop Application
- Tauri
- Rust
AI Integration
- Ollama
- Locally running open-weight language models
Repository Analysis

- Local filesystem scanning
- Static code and metadata analysis
Local Storage
- SQLite or local persistence for application settings and scan history, where implemented.
How AI Powers RepoRevenant
The AI is not just an additional chatbot. It is an important part of how RepoRevenant understands and explores codebases.
The workflow is designed around the following steps:
- The user selects a local repository.
- The application scans its files, folders, programming languages, and project structure.
- Git history is analysed to understand the repository's development timeline.
- Relevant source code and repository metadata are provided as context to a locally running AI model.
- The AI generates project explanations, identifies potential forgotten components, and answers developer questions.
- Users can explore the findings and generate a fictional ghost story inspired by the repository.
Ollama allows the application to communicate with locally running open-weight models without making a hosted AI API mandatory.
The application also uses deterministic analysis for tasks such as file scanning, metadata extraction, and Git history retrieval.
This combination allows AI to focus on understanding and explaining information rather than replacing reliable software analysis.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation is fundamental to RepoRevenant because source code is one of the most personal and valuable things a developer works with.
A repository can contain academic projects, personal experiments, professional code, private business logic, and unfinished ideas.
Sending all of that information to an external AI service should not be the only way to benefit from AI-powered development tools.
By building around open-weight models and local inference, RepoRevenant explores a more independent approach.
1. Privacy and Local Control
With local inference, repository context can be processed on the user's own machine instead of automatically sending it to a third-party AI provider.
This is particularly important when analysing private or sensitive codebases.
Users maintain greater control over their source code and how it is processed.
2. Offline AI Capabilities
When Ollama, the required model, and application dependencies are already available locally, RepoRevenant can perform AI-powered analysis without requiring an active internet connection.
This makes the application useful for developers who prefer offline workflows or work with unreliable internet connectivity.
3. Freedom to Choose Models
Open-weight models provide flexibility.
Developers can experiment with different models based on:
- Code understanding capabilities.
- Response quality.
- Speed.
- Hardware requirements.
- Available memory.
Instead of being permanently tied to one closed AI provider, the application can evolve as better open models become available.
4. Reduced Dependency on Recurring API Costs
Hosted AI services often introduce usage-based charges or subscriptions.
Local inference allows users to run compatible models without paying a hosted AI provider for every request.
Although local hardware, electricity, and storage still have costs, this approach can significantly reduce dependence on recurring AI API expenses.
5. Bringing Forgotten Projects Back to Life
Open-source software represents shared knowledge and collective innovation.
Thousands of projects contain ideas, experiments, and solutions that deserve to remain accessible.
RepoRevenant embraces this philosophy by making it easier to explore, understand, and rediscover existing codebases.
For me, open innovation means having the freedom to build, experiment, customize, and preserve software without depending entirely on closed platforms.
It makes RepoRevenant more private, flexible, and independent.
My Agent Session
Add your DevRelay agent session link here if available.
The session can demonstrate the development process, implementation decisions, and how AI-assisted development contributed to building RepoRevenant.
The Spirit of It
Every developer has a project they once cared about but eventually left behind.
Maybe it was a college assignment, a hackathon prototype, a personal experiment, or an idea that never reached completion.
Over time, those repositories become digital memories.
Their files remain. Their commits remain. Their unfinished functions remain.
But the people who created them may no longer remember how everything worked.
That thought inspired RepoRevenant.
I wanted to create something that could revisit those forgotten digital spaces and help developers understand their own creations again.
The spooky experience is just the beginning. Behind the ghost is a practical developer tool built to make software exploration easier.
Because sometimes, the scariest thing in a repository isn't a bug. It's code nobody remembers writing.

Final Thoughts
RepoRevenant is an exploration of how open-source AI can make software development more independent, private, and creative.
By combining local AI with repository analysis and Git history, it transforms the process of understanding forgotten code into an interactive experience.
The idea is simple:
Don't let old projects become digital ghosts.
Let RepoRevenant bring them back to life. 👻
