I Had an 8-Month Creative Block. Then I Ran a 30-Day Sacral Chakra Experiment — Here's Every Number.

Back in January I could ship a landing page in a weekend. By February, the side project I'd been building for two years — a tiny SEO audit tool — just stopped. No dramatic burnout, nothing I could point to. I'd open the editor, nudge three pixels around, close the laptop. Fourteen drafts of the same landing page are still sitting in my Figma. Every single one is named "final."

I track things compulsively, so I have the receipts: between February 12 and September 7, I averaged 0.4 commits per day on my own projects. Client work was fine. It was specifically the blank-page, from-scratch creative work that died.

A friend blamed my sacral chakra being "blocked." I blamed my thyroid. We were both guessing.

On September 7 she left a carnelian on my desk with a sticky note that said "stop rolling your eyes and just try it for a month." I'm an SEO guy. I live in spreadsheets. Stones are not my usual territory — I've written before about the $240 I spent on chakra stones and my 60-day sleep tracking experiment, and my conclusion both times was basically "the rock is probably a placebo, but the ritual around it is doing something." So I designed this the same way: one variable, thirty days, every number logged.

Here's what happened.

The setup

The rules were deliberately stupid-simple, because every self-improvement system I've ever abandoned died of complexity:

  1. Every morning before opening the laptop: sit down, hold the carnelian, do 10 minutes of pen-and-paper free writing. No phone in the room.
  2. The writing had one prompt: "what would I make today if nobody was going to see it?"
  3. Work sessions capped at 25 minutes, with the stone sitting next to the keyboard as a physical "this is creative time, not email time" marker.
  4. Evening: 2 minutes journaling what I actually made that day.

Total cost: $34. Carnelian tumbled stone $14, orange calcite $9, a tiger's eye I kept in my pocket during client meetings $11. That's it. No course, no app, no $180 "energy activation session," which is a real product I was emailed about and which I want you to know I did not buy.

If you want the framework behind the ritual — what sacral chakra work is even supposed to do — the one resource I'd point at is SagStone's guide to sacral chakra crystals and creative block. It's the only page on the topic I finished reading instead of bouncing off, mostly because it treats the stones as a focusing tool rather than a battery pack for your soul. Everything else I found was listicle sludge: "17 crystals that unlock your INNER ARTIST." No.

The data

Thirty days, September 8 to October 7. Baseline is the previous 30 days.

Metric Aug 8 – Sep 7 Sep 8 – Oct 7
Commits on side projects 11 (0.37/day) 63 (2.1/day)
Days with 30+ min on the project 4 of 30 26 of 30
Landing page iterations shipped 0 6
Words in morning free writes — 11,412
Beta invite signups 0 43
Afternoon doomscroll, avg min/day (RescueTime) 47 19

That last row surprised me most. The 2–4pm slump where I'd normally marinate in Twitter turned into the time I sketched pricing pages in a notebook. My guess is the free writing did it: once you've spent 10 minutes writing badly on purpose, a rough first draft of a hero section stops feeling dangerous.

The 43 signups came from one of the six shipped iterations — the one where I threw out my safe corporate copy and wrote the page like I'd explain it to a friend over beer. Posted it, went to make coffee, came back to 11 emails. First inbound interest in this project's two-year life.

The control week nobody asked for

Here's where I ruin the magic, because I owe you honesty after the sleep experiment: on days 18–21 I swapped the carnelian for a steel paperweight and told nobody, which is about as close to a control group as you get when the sample size is one guy.

I kept the exact same ritual. The numbers dipped — about 1.4 commits/day instead of 2.1, and one skipped morning — but nothing collapsed. When I swapped the stone back, nothing special happened either. No energy shift, no choir of angels.

My honest read: the stone is a trigger, not an engine. It's a $14 physical switch that tells my brain which mode we're in, the same way my brain knows what mode it's in when I sit in the gaming chair versus the desk chair. If carnelian is a placebo, it's a placebo with a 5x commit delta attached, and I've paid way more for worse APIs. If you'd rather anchor a morning ritual to calm instead of creativity — my wife uses hers before standups for anxiety — the same logic applies to root chakra grounding stones, and she describes hers as "a rock-shaped deep breath."

What I'd tell you to actually do

If you have a dead side project and a similar shape of block:

  • Buy one stone, not a kit. One carnelian or orange calcite, under $20. The seven-stone "chakra sets" are where the margin lives, and you'll end up using one of them anyway.
  • Attach it to a time, not a feeling. "Hold the stone and write for 10 minutes at 8:30" works. "When I feel blocked, I'll meditate" does not. Feelings are liars; calendar blocks aren't.
  • Log one number. Commit count, words, shipped iterations, anything. Thirty days later you'll know whether it helped or you just enjoyed it. Both outcomes are allowed.
  • Expect week two to suck. Days 8–12 were my worst — two skipped mornings and one 45-minute doomscroll relapse. It looked exactly like failure right before it stopped being one.

And if the whole scene is new to you, start with the beginner's crystal guide rather than the deep chakra pages — it'll save you from buying dyed quartz sold as citrine, which happened to me in March and which I am still annoyed about.

One more thing, since shipping is 80% of the battle: the weeks where I paired the morning ritual with publishing work-in-public were visibly better than the weeks I just made things privately. Whether that's confidence chemistry or solar plexus chakra territory I can't prove from n=1, but posting the ugly iteration on day 12 is what got me the 11 reply emails on day 19. The stone got me to the desk. Hitting publish got results.

The free writes also drifted somewhere I didn't expect. By week three they stopped being about the product and started being honest about why I froze for eight months — short version: I was terrified of shipping something mediocre under my own name, and client work lets you hide behind a brand. If you're the journaling type, the third eye chakra material on intuition and clarity sounds like astrology until it's you at 8:40am realizing in ink what you've been avoiding since February.

Verdict

Thirty days, $34, 5.7x the commits, one shipped beta, 43 signups, and a diagnosis of my own fear written in a $3 notebook. Would the same numbers have happened with any arbitrary desk object and the same ritual? The paperweight week says probably 70% yes.

I don't care. I have a project moving again and a morning habit I can keep forever.

Next experiment: 30 days of heart chakra stones to fix my pathological inability to say no to freelance clients. My wife has already bet on the outcome. Honestly, so have I.
