Happy Godzilla Day!

Due to work and life today, this may not have went up on November 3rd like I wanted it to or if it did, it was posted super late at night.

On this day in 1954 the Kaiju known as Godzilla was born and if you didn't know, today is Godzilla's birthday. Happy Godzilla Day!

So, in celebration of the occasion, I have decided to start watching some of the older Godzilla movies. I want to watch 1 film from each era. If your unfamiliar with Godzilla the eras of Godzilla are:

  • Shōwa era (1954-1975)
  • Heisei era (1984-1995)
  • Millennium era (1999-2004)
  • Reiwa era (2016-present)

"The Godzilla film series is broken into several (different) eras reflecting a characteristic style and corresponding to the same eras used to classify all kaiju eiga (monster movies) in Japan. The first, second, and fourth eras refer to the Japanese emperor during production: the Shōwa era, the Heisei era, and the Reiwa era. The third is called the Millennium era, as the emperor (Heisei) is the same, but these films are considered to have a different style and storyline than the Heisei era."

So, as I mentioned, I want to watch 1 film from each era. This was a SUPER hard decision to make. There are so many good Godzilla films. So many iconic monsters that Godzilla has tangled with over his illustrious 68 year career.

I have been a fan of the Godzilla franchise ever since I was a little kid. I remember me and my dad watching them when I was younger and it's something that has stuck with me. I always have fond memories looking back at it. Kaiju and giant mechs are something that I LOVE and hold near and dear to my heart. They shaped my love of scifi and to this day, they are probably my favorite mediums to watch/play/read.

Here are the ones I have decided to watch.

Godzilla (1954, Shōwa era):

OG_Godzilla

I couldn't have a Godzilla marathon for Godzilla day without going back to where it all started. This is the movie that cemented Godzilla in cinema history. A classic Godzilla film, and a good way to start off the marathon.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991, Heisei era):

Ghidorah

I chose this one because one, I hadn't seen it, and two because Ghidorah looks AWESOME in the poster. There were so many cool monsters in this era that this was a hard choice. So I went based off of the movie poster (super scientific right)

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002, Millennium era):

mechagodzilla

This is the one that started off this crazy idea to marathon the movies. I saw that a local theatre was going to be doing a screening of this movie for Godzilla day and I really wanted to go. Sadly, with work and everything I had to do after, I knew I wasn't going to be able to make it to the showing. So, I decided that I would watch it when I got home, plus a few extras and have my own in-home Godzilla marathon.

Shin Godzilla (2016, Reiwa era):

shin godzilla

Last but not least, we have Shin Godzilla. The main reason why I selected this one was that the other 3 choices from this era were all animated. Now, while I have nothing against animation, I really wanted to make this a live action Godzilla marathon. This was another one of the Godzilla movies that I have yet to see so it'll be interesting.

In conclusion

So yeah, I got a night of Godzilla movies ahead of me and I am EXCITED! Literally 1 movie from each era. I decided that I would watch the American Godzilla movies on a different day. I wanted to mainly watch the Japanese ones. Overall I am super excited to start watching these. I'll probably wind up watching all of them over the course of the next week. (Maybe I do a follow up blog on that?)

Anyway, thank you so much for watching and HAPPY GODZILLA DAY everyone!
