Why RBI Launches AI-Powered Digital Payment Intelligence Platform in India

The announcement was made by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra during the FIBAC 2026 conference in Mumbai on August 11. As digital transactions through UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and digital wallets continue to increase, cybercriminals are also using advanced methods to target customers and financial institutions. The RBI's latest initiative aims to strengthen India's banking security by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

As per the statement of the RBI Governor, the Digital Payment Intelligence Platform is expected to make it possible for banks to detect fraudulent activities more quickly than before. Rather than detecting any fraud after it occurs, the digital payment intelligence platform will be able to do an analysis of the payment transactions in real time and notify the bank about any anomaly detected.

AI and Machine Learning to Strengthen Fraud Detection

AI and machine learning are expected to play a major role in this new system. These technologies can process millions of digital transactions every day and identify patterns that human analysts may miss. As fraudsters increasingly use AI-driven techniques, banks must also adopt advanced technology to stay ahead of cybercriminals.

The RBI has made it clear that technology is not sufficient by itself. According to Malhotra, the governor of the RBI, banks need to adopt robust AI governance. Each bank needs to have specific policies for the adoption of AI, track the use of AI models, and keep customer data safe.

Human Oversight Will Continue to Play a Key Role

The Governor also highlighted that smaller banks may not have the resources to build their own AI systems. In such cases, they may rely on third-party technology providers. Even then, banks must ensure that customer data is protected and AI systems remain transparent and accountable.

One of the key messages from the RBI was that AI should support human decision-making—not replace it. Final responsibility for important banking decisions should always remain with bank officials. Human oversight will continue to play an essential role in maintaining fairness, accuracy, and accountability in the banking sector. Lawenforcementdaily believes that combining advanced AI technology with experienced human oversight will help create a safer and more reliable banking system while reducing the growing threat of financial fraud.

RBI Continues Banking Reforms

Apart from tackling financial fraud, the RBI also discussed several recent banking reforms. The central bank has upgraded its PRAVAAH platform by introducing more automation to simplify regulatory applications. It has also updated rules related to current accounts, working capital financing, and other banking regulations to improve customer service and reduce operational costs.

Governor Malhotra also spoke about India's growing digital public infrastructure, saying it provides a strong foundation for expanding AI-based financial services. The RBI is working to strengthen the Unified Lending Interface (ULI) and the Account Aggregator framework to improve credit access and promote financial inclusion across the country.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

At the same time, the RBI warned that careless implementation of AI could unintentionally create new barriers for certain sections of society. Therefore, banks must ensure that AI systems remain fair, transparent, and accessible for every customer.

India has become one of the world's leading digital payment markets, with billions of UPI transactions processed every month. While this growth has made banking faster and more convenient, it has also increased the risk of scams, phishing attacks, identity theft, fake payment requests, and other cybercrimes. Strengthening protection against financial fraud has therefore become a top priority. At Lawenforcementdaily, we closely monitor developments in cybersecurity and banking to keep readers informed about the latest efforts to protect consumers from digital financial crimes.

Conclusion

The RBI's Digital Payment Intelligence Platform represents a major step toward building a safer digital banking ecosystem. By combining AI-powered monitoring with responsible governance and human supervision, the central bank hopes to reduce online payment scams and improve customer confidence in digital banking.

At Lawenforcementdaily, we believe this initiative will strengthen India's financial security while encouraging innovation in digital banking. As cyber threats continue to evolve, stronger collaboration between regulators, banks, and technology providers will be essential to protect consumers from financial fraud and ensure India's digital economy remains secure and trustworthy.
