Pairing and code review never just transferred code. They transferred judgment. That transfer happened because people needed each other — senior needs their task done, junior needs to learn, the code review loop is where both things happen simultaneously. AI quietly removes that dependency. Firms cutting junior hiring now aren't just saving headcount. They're deleting their own senior pipeline for 2030.
I've mentored juniors through code review for years. The gap between a junior who's been paired with a senior and one who hasn't, isn't a skills gap — it's a judgment gap. AI can close the first one. Nobody's built the thing that closes the second.
