A practical reference for the metrics that matter when you run and optimize Facebook (Meta) ad campaigns.

Why Metrics Matter
Running Facebook Ads without understanding the metrics is like driving with the dashboard covered. Every number Meta shows you answers a specific question about your campaign: Is anyone seeing this? Are they interested? Are they buying? Am I paying too much?
This guide groups the most important metrics into four stages of the funnel so you always know which number to watch.
- Reach & Awareness Metrics
These tell you how many people your ads are touching and how often.
Impressions
The number of times your ad was shown. One person can see the same ad many times, so impressions count every single display.
Impressions ≠ Reach. Impressions can be far higher than reach because of repeat views.
Reach
The number of unique people who saw your ad. If 1,000 people each saw your ad twice, reach is 1,000 but impressions are 2,000.
Frequency
How many times, on average, each person saw your ad.
Frequency = Impressions ÷ Reach
A frequency above ~3–4 on the same audience usually means ad fatigue is setting in.
CPM (Cost per 1,000 Impressions)
How much you pay per 1,000 impressions served.
CPM = (Spend ÷ Impressions) × 1,000
- Engagement Metrics
These show whether people actually react to your ad.
CTR (Click-Through Rate)
The percentage of impressions that resulted in a click.
CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100
Low CTR usually means weak creative or poor audience targeting.
CPC (Cost per Click)
The average amount you pay each time someone clicks.
CPC = Spend ÷ Clicks
Engagement Rate
Likes, comments, shares, and saves relative to reach or impressions. High engagement signals relevance, which Meta rewards with cheaper delivery.
Link Clicks vs. All Clicks
Be careful: "clicks" can include clicks on the profile name or "like." Link clicks are the ones that actually go to your destination.
- Conversion Metrics
This is where ad spend turns into business results.
CVR (Conversion Rate)
The percentage of link clicks that complete your desired action (purchase, signup, lead).
CVR = (Conversions ÷ Link Clicks) × 100
CPA / Cost per Result (Cost per Acquisition)
What you pay for each conversion or result.
CPA = Spend ÷ Conversions
This is the metric most advertisers care about most.
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)
Revenue generated for every dollar spent on ads.
ROAS = Revenue from Ads ÷ Ad Spend
A ROAS of 3 means you earned $3 for every $1 spent.
- Quality & Diagnostic Metrics
Meta uses these to decide how often to show your ad and at what price.
Quality Ranking
How your ad's perceived quality compares to competing ads targeting the same audience.
Engagement Rate Ranking
How your ad's expected engagement compares to similar ads.
Conversion Rate Ranking
How your ad's expected conversion rate compares to similar ads.
Poor rankings → higher costs and less delivery.
Quick Cheat Sheet
Metric Question it answers
Reach How many unique people saw it?
Frequency How often did they see it?
CTR Did the creative grab attention?
CPC How cheaply did we get clicks?
CVR Did clicks turn into actions?
CPA What did each result cost?
ROAS Did the campaign make money?
How to Use This in Practice
Start at the top. If reach and frequency are healthy but CTR is low, fix the creative.
Middle of funnel. Good CTR but low CVR? Your landing page or offer is the problem.
Bottom line. Track CPA and ROAS against your break-even point. If ROAS is below break-even, the campaign loses money regardless of vanity metrics.
Watch frequency. Keep it under ~3 to avoid burning out your audience.
