AI Photo Cleanup Needs a Text Review: Alt Text, Captions, and Unsupported Claims

After AI photo cleanup, review the image and its accompanying text together: describe the delivered image, explain meaningful edits, and do not turn generated detail into a factual claim.

By the removestickerfromphoto editorial team. We operate Remove Sticker From Photo. This AI-assisted article proposes a publishing checklist; it does not report a user study or claim that our editor automatically audits alt text.

Treat a replaced image as a content change

Replacing an image should reopen its text review, even when the filename stays the same. A caption written for a source photo can become misleading after a sticker, decorative badge, or overlay disappears. Conversely, a newly generated detail may look convincing without being reliable evidence.

Consider this deliberately fictional fixture: an owned photo of a blue ceramic mug carries a seller-added yellow “SALE” badge over the tabletop. The edit removes that badge. The mug remains visible in both versions.

  • Stale description: “Blue mug beside a yellow SALE badge.” It describes the old file.
  • Unsupported description: “Handmade cobalt mug on an authentic oak table.” The edit cannot establish the manufacturing method or wood species.
  • Grounded description: “Blue ceramic mug on a tabletop.”
  • Separate editorial caption: “Seller-added promotional badge removed with AI; the covered background was reconstructed.”

These are writing examples, not measured outputs from an image-generation test.

Separate three responsibilities

Alt text, visible captions, and private production notes serve different purposes. W3C recommends choosing image alternatives according to their purpose and context; see its alt decision tree.

Alt text carries the relevant visual meaning

Describe what a reader needs from this image in this placement. Do not stuff it with tool keywords, nor guess a hidden material, brand, price, or serial number. The same image in a cleanup comparison needs different wording from an image illustrating a mug's color.

A caption explains the editorial change

Give readers a visible explanation when the change matters to their interpretation. Disclosure should not be available only to people using a screen reader. Avoid “original background recovered”: AI synthesizes a plausible replacement rather than retrieving covered pixels.

A production note preserves the decision

Keep the source, candidate, intended edit, and unresolved questions together. Do not publish private source locations or account details. A note is a workflow aid, not a certificate of authenticity.

Add a small review gate to your CMS workflow

Reopen text approval whenever the asset or its placement changes. A simple proposed record is enough:

  • Asset version: mug-cleanup-v2
  • Placement: cleanup-comparison
  • Text review: pending
  • Checks: matches delivered image; no invented product claims; edit disclosed.

This schema is illustrative, not an existing product endpoint. A reviewer must inspect the actual asset before changing the status.

Run the image-hidden check

Read the caption and description without looking at the picture, then reveal it and compare the claims one by one.

  1. Cross out objects or badges no longer present.
  2. Flag details whose only evidence is the generated patch.
  3. Verify product facts against an independent source or omit them.
  4. Make the editing explanation visible when relevant.
  5. Repeat on the published page, not just the CMS preview.

Do not use this workflow to remove legitimate attribution or expose sensitive redactions. If accurate hidden content is essential, obtain the unedited source instead.

For the actual photo-editing steps, our official sticker-removal guide covers selection and comparison. The extra publishing step here is manual: a clean-looking picture still needs an accurate description.
