Why Remove the Anode
Conventional NMC pouch cells plateau in the 250–300 Wh/kg range. Much of that ceiling has nothing to do with the cathode — it comes from the graphite or silicon anode inside the can, which adds weight and volume without storing much energy relative to its mass.
The PE49N-EF eliminates that component. Lithium metal plates directly onto the bare current collector during the cells first charge, while a solid electrolyte separator keeps that lithium stable — avoiding the dendrite formation that has historically limited anode-free battery designs built on liquid electrolytes. The result is a 49Ah cell that reaches 495 Wh/kg, roughly double the specific energy of a same-format NMC cell, while operating across a -43°C to 55°C range that most liquid-electrolyte chemistries cannot match at the cold end.
“Most energy-dense cells on the market get there by pushing the cathode chemistry harder,” said of LiTrue. “We took a different approach and removed the anode’s dead weight instead. An Honest Trade-Off
LiTrue is direct about what the design does not target. The PE49N-EF is rated for a 0.5C continuous charge and 3C continuous discharge — modest by high-rate cell standards — because the lithium-metal anode is sensitive to plating current at higher rates. The company positions the cell for endurance and payload-driven missions rather than high-acceleration or fast-turnaround use cases, and cycle life on this first-generation anode-free platform trails conventional NMC cells, consistent with the current state of anode-free technology industry-wide.
