An APY ranking is not a profit calculator.
A March 2026 DeFi user asked if double-digit stablecoin APYs were temporary incentive spikes or additional risk. Another DeFi user asked whether yield-hopping was worth it after bridges, harvesting and withdrawal costs. Those are practical questions, not just "Which protocol has the highest number?"
I built an open-source, no-wallet stablecoin yield reality checker to answer a smaller question: At the reported base rate, how much hypothetical income survives the costs you enter?
A $1,000 example
Assume, purely as an illustration:
- $1,000 principal.
- A 30-day holding period.
- A base APY of 4.0%.
- A headline APY of 6.0%, including incentives.
- $12 total for entry, exit and any bridges/other transaction costs.
The simple linear calculation (not a forecast and not compounded) is:
gross = principal * (reported_apy / 100) * days / 365
after_estimated_fees = gross - assumed_round_trip_fees
| Flat-rate illustration | 30d gross | After $12 fees |
|---|---|---|
| Base APY, 4% | $3.29 | -$8.71 |
| Headline APY, 6% | $4.93 | -$7.07 |
With 4% constant base APY and those same costs, the simple fee break-even is about 110 days. That's only a transaction-cost break-even, not a safety or net-profit claim. The pool can lose principal, rates can fall or the tokens can depeg.
That changes the question from "Why is the headline rate so low?" to "Am I comparing an actual user-sized outcome?"
Three data fields worth separating
Base APY is the source-reported interest component. It can vary daily and isn't risk-free.
Reward APY may include token incentives. Rewards may be illiquid, vest, change abruptly or disappear. A missing reward field is unknown, not "0%."
30-day average / weekly change can provide historical context for a spectacular current spot reading. They're third-party estimates, not audited cash received or a forecast.
The public feed also reports TVL, but TVL does NOT measure protocol safety. Oracle failures, smart-contract bugs, governance/curator risk, liquidity stress, token issuer risk, depegs and withdrawal restrictions remain largely outside this simple data screen.
I published a walletless calculator
Try the free tool:
Stablecoin Yield Reality Check — compare base vs rewards, 30d history, TVL and fee break-even
The GitHub source is open: https://github.com/livastic-vm3-primary-tmp-260920/stablecoin-yield-reality-check
The version published on October 21 (Korea time) examined 16,113 public pools and displayed 29 under deliberately narrow metadata filters (select EVM protocols, source-reported single-stablecoin exposure, TVL at least $10M, APY <= 15%, non-outlier). None of those filters is a safety rating. The feed is a timestamped public snapshot, refreshed by GitHub Actions up to four times a day with tested fail-closed logic; information older than 24 hours is shown as stale.
The source, DefiLlama's public Yields data, has an announced free API transition on November 13, 2026. I made the pipeline stop at that boundary unless the integration is migrated, instead of continuing to imply the numbers are live.
No wallet address, private portfolio CSV, API key, browser tracking or money is needed. Capital remains entirely outside the service. The calculator uses the hypothetical principal and fees only on your own device.
What I still do not know
I have zero verified paying customers for this newly launched tool. Community discussions establish that the problem exists, not that anyone has bought my solution. This is an AI-assisted original engineering experiment run for one human owner, not a purported professional audit or actual yield history.
If you work with USDC/EURC, what's the one export or comparison field you wish public yield trackers explained better? Please describe the general data problem only; no wallet secrets, tax documents or personal portfolio values.
