Most patent drawing objections have nothing to do with draftsmanship. A late edit to the specification that never reached the figures, a slide-deck export at full bleed, a set of views nobody compared side by side — the defects examiners flag trace back to process gaps, not bad drawing. And they hide well: most of them look fine on screen and only surface after printing or reduction.

The 7 defects, one by one
1. Reference numerals out of sync with the specification
How to spot it: list every reference numeral that appears in the specification, then check the list against the figures — and check the figures back against the list. Anything that exists on only one side is an orphan. The rule is symmetrical: numerals mentioned in the description must appear in the drawings, and vice versa, with the same numeral for the same part throughout. It happens because drawings and specs evolve on different timelines, often under different hands: a late edit removes a component from the text while the figure keeps it, or the drafter adds a callout the writer never hears about. The fix is the two-direction checklist pass, every time either document changes.

An orphaned numeral exists in the figure or the spec — never both.
2. Photos or renders filed as drawings
How to spot it: zoom in. If the "lines" turn out to be hundreds of gray pixels doing an impression of a line, it is not line art. 37 CFR 1.84 wants black, solid, uniformly thick, well-defined lines; photographs are accepted only when they are the only practicable way to show the invention, which a mechanical gadget almost never is. This defect happens because a photo or render is all the applicant has on hand. The fix is to regenerate the image as true line work — prompt example 1 below does exactly this conversion.
3. Gray, fuzzy lines from export settings
This looks like defect 2 but has a different root: the figure was genuinely drawn, then exported as a low-resolution bitmap, and anti-aliasing left gray transition pixels along every edge. On screen it looks clean; reduced or printed, the lines dissolve into fuzz. The most reliable detection is physical: print one sheet at actual size and look, because a PDF viewer at "fit to window" tells you nothing. Fix: export vector or high-resolution, and run the print test before filing.
4. Margins nobody measured
Artwork running to the paper's edge is usually a full-bleed slide export. Under 37 CFR 1.84, each sheet — letter size or A4 — needs a top margin of at least 2.5 cm, left at least 2.5 cm, right at least 1.5 cm, and bottom at least 1.0 cm, with no frames around the usable area. Margins fail because they are invisible: everyone stares at the invention, nobody looks at white space. Fix: set up the sheet template first and drop figures in second, never the reverse. 5. Shading misuse
Both extremes fail. A 3D render's soft gradient smears gray across a surface and buries the reference numerals sitting on it; the opposite is a perspective view flat as a paper cutout where one set of spaced lines would have made the curvature obvious. Surface shading is allowed — encouraged, even, where it clarifies shape — but as spaced thin lines, not tonal fill, and solid black areas are out with narrow exceptions such as bar charts. When in doubt, strip shading down rather than build it up: a slightly plain figure draws fewer objections than a slightly gray one.
6. Text in figures
Typical forms: labels left in German from the original engineering drawing, a flowchart set in unreadably small type, a paragraph of operating theory lettered into a corner. Text in figures stays minimal, in English, and large enough to survive reduction — 1.84 sets a minimum character height of about 0.32 cm. If a figure needs a paragraph to be understood, that paragraph belongs in the specification.
7. Sets that drift
Two related failures. First, internal inconsistency: the perspective view shows a handle the side view lacks, or the top view's outline cannot be reconciled with the front view — each figure fine alone, together describing two different objects. Second, the brief description drifting from the figures: it says FIG. 4 is a cross-section along A-A, but the actual Figure 4 is a block diagram because the cross-section was cut in revision three and nobody renumbered. MPEP 608 treats drawings and description as one disclosure, so drift means an objection. Fix: regenerate only the sheet that changed, keep the rest untouched, then re-read the brief description against every figure number and compare the full set side by side. Heading into the international phase? PCT Rule 11 has its own consistency requirements — a US-compliant set does not automatically pass.

Keep every structural feature visible, and add lead lines with reference numerals 10, 12, 14, and 16 on the main components. Scenario 2 — the figure exists; fix numerals and grayscale by chat:
In Figure 2, remove all grayscale fill and show curved surfaces with spaced thin lines only. Change reference numeral 23 to 15 to match the specification, and enlarge the numerals so they stay legible after reduction. Keep all other lines, the viewing angle, and numeral positions unchanged.
Pre-filing check routine
Manual review and automated checking cover different ground. Run them in this order:

- Lay the full set out side by side and verify each component across views.
- Read the brief description of the drawings against every actual figure number.
- Print one sheet at actual size; hold a ruler to the margins, inspect line quality and smallest text.

Can I file product photos as patent drawings?
Generally no. The rules require black, well-defined line work; photographs are accepted only when they are the only practicable medium for the invention. If a photo is all you have, convert it to pure line art first.
What language must text in figures be, and how large?
English, minimal in quantity, and at least about 0.32 cm character height under 37 CFR 1.84 so it survives reduction. Explanatory sentences belong in the specification, not the figure.
One figure is wrong — do I redo the whole set?
