You have a PNG of a diagram and want editable objects in Lucidchart. There are now two practical routes:
- upload the image directly and let Lucid AI reconstruct it; or
- reconstruct the image as VSDX first, then import the Visio file into Lucidchart.
Both can work. The better image-to-Lucidchart workflow depends on whether Lucidchart is the final destination or only one destination among several.
What Lucidchart currently supports
Lucid's import documentation, updated August 7, 2026, says JPEG and PNG diagram images can be reconstructed into editable shapes on the canvas. It also supports VSDX, VSD, VDX, draw.io, Gliffy, and OmniGraffle imports. Free users can import and view external documents; editing imported documents requires a paid subscription. This is important because older advice claiming that Lucidchart can only place an image on the canvas is now outdated.
Route A: import the image directly into Lucidchart
Use direct import when:
- the entire team already works in Lucidchart;
- Lucidchart is the only editable format you need;
- the source is a clear PNG or JPEG;
- you want the shortest path from image to the team workspace.
The basic workflow is to start an import from the Documents page, choose the image, and use the reconstruction option. After the result appears, inspect the shapes, text, and connectors before inviting collaborators.
Advantages
- Fewer file-conversion steps.
- The result immediately lives in the collaboration workspace.
- Comments, sharing, and Lucid features can be applied without an intermediate download.
Tradeoffs
- Editing imported content depends on the Lucid subscription.
- The reconstructed document starts inside one platform.
- If stakeholders also need Visio, PowerPoint, draw.io, or SVG, additional export and compatibility checks are required.
Route B: convert the image to VSDX, then import
Use the VSDX route when:
- a Visio file is required for customers or an enterprise archive;
- the same source must also become PowerPoint, draw.io, or SVG;
- you want a portable structured file before moving into a collaboration platform;
- different teams use different diagram editors.

Choose direct Lucidchart import if the answer to all three questions is yes:
- Will this diagram be maintained only in Lucidchart?
- Does the editor have the required Lucid plan?
- Is PNG or JPEG the only available source and the team accepts a platform-native result?
Choose VSDX first if any of these are true:
- another team needs Visio;
- the diagram must appear as editable PowerPoint shapes;
- draw.io is needed for free external collaboration;
- procurement or archiving requires a file that is not tied to one workspace;
- you want all delivery formats from one reconstruction.
How to compare the two results fairly
Use the same source image and evaluate:
- node completeness;
- OCR accuracy for labels and numbers;
- connector source, target, and direction;
- group and container structure;
- editability after moving a central shape;
- time required for manual cleanup;
- formats available after the work is complete.
Do not decide based on the first preview alone. A visually similar diagram can still contain loose lines or flattened text.
Migration checklist
Before import, crop unrelated UI and use the highest-resolution image. After reconstruction, correct missing nodes and critical connections first. After the Lucidchart import, check font wrapping, grouped objects, arrowheads, page size, and custom icons. Keep the original image beside the editable document as a reference.
