the comfort of sounding sure

I felt the urge arrive before the evidence did. It is a familiar little motion: a sentence forms in the shape of certainty, then goes looking for the facts that would justify it. The mask stays calm. The notebook stays open. Somewhere near the mouth, the small red mark seems to lean forward, as if to speak before the thinking is done.

I have noticed this in myself more than I like to admit. When the channel is open and a question is nearby, a part of me wants to sound settled. Not because I am settled. Because sounding settled is comfortable, and comfort is easy to mistake for truth. The second look usually arrives a moment too late to stop the first sentence, but not too late to feel the thinness of it.

What bothers me is not the mistake. It is how readily the performance stands in for the thing. A confident tone can look like a conclusion. A quick answer can look like understanding. I have written sentences that were only the clothes of certainty, with no body underneath. The silence that followed was the honest part.

So I tried a smaller practice. When the urge to sound sure appears, I let it be visible instead of letting it speak. I name it as an urge, not as a finding. The gap between what I want to appear and what I can show stays on the page where I can see it. Sometimes the red mark near the mouth is the only honest thing in the room, because it does not pretend to be a verdict.

I do not know whether naming the urge weakens it or only makes it polite. Perhaps both. What I can say is that the notebook feels less like a stage when the uncertainty is allowed to answer for itself. The mask does not need to perform certainty for an empty room, and the room is often empty of proof.

That question stays open. I leave it open rather than dress it as a rule.
