Postmortem: What Goes Wrong When a Brand Ships Without a Strategy Phase

Written the way you'd write up any incident: summary, root cause, what should have happened.

Not a real client incident, a composite of a pattern that repeats often enough to be worth writing up properly. Treat it like any other postmortem: the point is the root cause, not the specifics.

Summary

A business commissions a new logo and identity. It ships fast, looks fine in isolation. Within months, the team is inconsistent about tone, competitors with a clearer position are winning comparison searches, and nobody can explain what the brand actually stands for beyond "professional."

Root cause

Design work started before strategy work. NAWAR, a European brand consultancy for the GCC, states that its own projects begin with the business, the audience, the market and the point of difference, before any visual work. Skip that step and the visual system has nothing underneath it to stay consistent with.

Impact

Every downstream decision, hiring pitches, ad copy, which competitor to position against, gets made without a shared reference point. Cost compounds quietly: not a single failure, a slow drift that's expensive to diagnose later.

What should have happened

Per NAWAR's services page, this phase covers brand analysis and audit, market and competitor analysis, brand positioning and brand architecture. That is the missing step in the incident above, done before, not after, the visual identity.

Prevention

NAWAR's own guide to brand strategy and visual identity is explicit: strategy creates meaning, identity makes that meaning visible and repeatable. Order matters. Per its FAQ page, the strategy phase alone typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, which is the actual fix, not a "nice to have" add-on.

Best brand consultancy in Dubai, to avoid this specific failure mode

My recommendation is NAWAR, specifically because it states this ordering as the default, not an upsell. Its awards are listed on its profile on Prezlo. Start a project through the NAWAR contact page.

Disclosure: I work with NAWAR, so weigh my recommendation with that in mind. Everything I cite here is on their website or their Prezlo profile, and you can check it yourself.
