I started writing software in 1984. Over the years I worked with many languages, technologies, and tools. I have been in leadership positions since the early 2000s, and in executive roles since 2014.
I write very little code, and I decided that it is ok. It is hard to scale otherwise.
Now... it depends on how many people you have. I have 10 direct reports and 35 engineers overall, so time for flow is pretty impossible to find.
I mostly work on personal projects at home and keep up that way. I am also very active as an architect and spend a lot of time brainstorming high-level system designs and data flows. Finally, I try to participate in code reviews to keep up with some of the details.
