Google AI Mode builds its answers from pages that already rank well in Google Search. If your page does not rank, AI Mode will not cite it.
This guide explains how AI Mode picks its sources and the steps you can take to get cited.
How AI Mode picks its sources
AI Mode runs on Google's normal crawling, indexing and ranking systems. Google's documentation on AI features confirms this. In practice, that means:
• There is no separate sign-up. Any indexed page that can show a snippet in search can appear in AI Mode.
• You do not need special AI tags or files such as ai.txt.
• You can keep a page in search but out of AI answers with nosnippet, max-snippet or data-nosnippet.
When someone asks a long question, AI Mode splits it into several smaller searches. This is called query fan-out. It reads the top results for each smaller search and writes one answer with links to its sources.
For example, someone asks for project management software for a 20-person design agency that uses Figma. AI Mode might run searches like these:
• project management software for design agencies
• project management tool with Figma integration
• project management software pricing for 20 users
This is why a page can be cited without ranking for the full question. An Ahrefs study of 15,000 prompts found that only 12% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the original prompt. A page can still earn a citation by ranking well for one of the smaller searches.
Write content AI can quote
AI Mode reads pages in short passages of about 100 to 200 words. It prefers clear facts over sales language.
• Put the key facts in the top 30% of the page: product name, what it does, price and main integrations.
• Write each sentence so it makes sense on its own.
• Use exact numbers instead of words like "best" or "powerful".
• Show pricing and feature comparisons in simple HTML tables with clear headers.
• Do not repeat keywords. It lowers the amount of useful information on the page.
Here is the difference in practice.
Weak: "TaskNest is the ultimate platform that helps creative teams work smarter and deliver more."
Strong: "TaskNest is project management software for design agencies. It costs $12 per user per month, connects to Figma, and tracks client approvals in one dashboard."
The first version has no facts. The second gives the category, price, integration and main feature in two sentences.
A study on Generative Engine Optimization by researchers at Princeton University and Georgia Tech backs this up. Adding statistics raised AI visibility by 31%. Adding technical terms raised it by 18%, and repeating keywords lowered it by 8%.
Also give each topic its own page. Since AI Mode runs many smaller searches, one general page is not enough. Build separate pages for key integrations, pricing plans, use cases and compliance topics so each can rank for its own search.
Get other sites to confirm your facts
AI models check facts across several sources before they recommend a brand. If review sites, comparison articles and forums show the same details as your site, AI Mode has more reason to cite you.
• Check your listings on review sites and fix old prices or features.
• Look for comparison articles that mention you and ask the authors to correct errors.
• Make sure forum discussions about your product have accurate details.
Get the technical basics right
AI Mode can only use pages Google can crawl and understand.
• Allow Googlebot. Do not block product, pricing or integration pages in robots.txt.
• Fix crawl errors. Keep a clean XML sitemap and check your pages in Google Search Console.
• Use server-rendered HTML. Product names, prices, integrations and limits should load in the first HTML response. Content that needs JavaScript to load can be slower to index.
• Add structured data. Use Schema.org JSON-LD such as SoftwareApplication or Product, with name, category and price.
Track your share of answers
AI Mode writes each answer fresh, so there is no fixed position like #1 to track. Its smaller searches are created on the spot, and small changes in wording can bring up different sources. No tactic can guarantee you a place in the answer.
Track share of answers instead. This is how often your brand appears across many versions of the same question. If you test 20 versions of a prompt over a month and appear in 12 answers, your share of answers is 60%.
Also note that few people click the source links. Pew Research Center data shows users click a link in AI summaries on about 1% of visits.
Tools like Lumirank track share of answers daily across Google AI Mode and 5 other AI search engines. The free plan tracks 10 prompts a day across 2 models. Then track how often you show up.
