What is Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Optical character recognition (OCR) is sometimes referred to as "text recognition." It is the extraction of data into machine-encoded text from scanned documents, images, and PDFs. The original material can be accessed and edited by using OCR software, which isolates letters on the image, turns them into words, and then turns the words into sentences.

OCR is extensively used as a form of data entry from printed records. This technology allows people to digitize data for increased productivity.
