What I Learned From 3,000 Car Buyers in 2026

I spent last weekend reading through three massive car buyer surveys. The Urban Science Harris Poll talked to 3,012 buyers. Cox Automotive crunched the industry numbers. JD Power tracked every sale.

Here is what stuck with me.

Most buyers have no idea what car they want

This one surprised me. According to the Cox Automotive 2026 Car Buyer Journey Study, 71% of buyers start the process without knowing what they will purchase. Not the model. Not the brand. They just know they need a car.

As someone who reviews cars, this makes total sense. People do not wake up wanting a Honda CR-V. They wake up wanting more cargo space than their old sedan. The car comes later.

The average new car now costs over $50,000

Kelley Blue Book reported the average transaction price crossed $50,000 in August 2026. The average monthly payment hit $765. One in five financed buyers now pays over $1,000 a month.

Here is the part nobody talks about: 29.6% of trade-ins now carry negative equity. People are rolling debt from their old car into their new loan. The average amount owed above value is $6,884.

Buyers are going used and going older

CarGurus found that sales of 7-to-10-year-old vehicles jumped from 17% of the used market in 2020 to 23% in 2026. Vehicles with 60,000 to 150,000 miles are up 16% in sales volume. The top sellers are Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, RAM 1500. Around $20,000 with 120,000+ miles.

Hybrids are eating the market

Hybrid share of new retail sales hit 16% in mid-2026. Used hybrid sales are up 34% year to date. The Toyota Camry Hybrid alone is up 306%.

Meanwhile EV share sits at 7.4% after federal credits disappeared. Average EV incentive: $9,824 per unit.

The buyer is getting older

Buyers 18 to 34 are below 10% of new registrations. Buyers 55 and older make up nearly half the market. Households over $150,000 account for 42% of new retail sales, up from 29% in 2020.

What this means if you are shopping

Shop the incentive. Average is $3,217 right now. Dealers are discounting.

Buying used? Do not fear miles. A well-maintained car at 100,000 miles beats a sketchy one at 50,000.
