Vercel Web Analytics vs Plausible: Which Fits Your Site?

A team building on Vercel may ask whether the analytics panel already beside deployments is enough, or whether it needs a website analytics product that follows the site independently of its host. Vercel Web Analytics and Plausible are both privacy-minded, but they optimize for different work. Clics analytics is worth evaluating beside them when conversion paths, visit detail, AI referrals, and verified crawler requests matter in one managed product.

This comparison uses the requirements a growth and development team can test on one real site: installation, pages and sources, campaigns, events and revenue, goals and funnels, sessions, privacy, AI traffic, data access, and cost. The firm dependency decides the winner.

Setup and platform fit

Vercel Web Analytics fits a site already deployed on Vercel. Enable it in the project and add its package to the app. Traffic appears in the same platform where the team inspects deployments. That tight fit is the reason to choose it when the deployment dashboard is the intended reporting home.

Plausible is a separate analytics service with a small tracking script. Plausible Cloud handles hosting; Community Edition offers self-hosting with a different feature set, so check edition-specific availability before a migration. It fits teams that want analytics independent of their deployment provider.

Clics also uses a lightweight, cookieless browser tracker across documented frameworks. It is a managed service rather than a Vercel feature or a self-hosted analytics installation. Clics analytics wins when the team wants a portable, focused analytics workflow but also needs more conversion and visit detail than the built-in Vercel panel.

Traffic, campaigns, and conversions

Vercel reports visitors, pageviews, top pages, referrers, geography, devices, and browsers. Its custom events can record actions such as button clicks and purchases on eligible plans. The pricing and limits page says custom events require Pro or Enterprise, while UTM parameters require Web Analytics Plus or Enterprise. That plan boundary matters if the team needs reliable campaign-to-conversion reporting. Vercel also reports feature flag usage, a strength for teams already using its platform.

Plausible documents channels, sources, campaigns, custom events, goals, funnel analysis, user journeys, and ecommerce revenue. A marketer can filter by source and see landing pages and goals without leaving the main reporting surface. It wins for a clear, host-independent acquisition report with mature conversion features.

Clics analytics documents visitors, pages, referrers, UTMs, events, page and event goals, revenue, funnels, and individual session timelines. A developer can instrument a signup event while a marketer reads which landing page and campaign preceded it, then checks where the funnel loses visitors. Clics wins when that full website journey belongs in a simple managed product.

Privacy, sessions, and control

All three describe cookie-free measurement. Vercel says it stores anonymized data and identifies visitors with a hash that resets daily. Plausible avoids long-term identifiers and supports a self-hosted edition for teams that need deployment control. Clics analytics measures without analytics cookies and provides visit-level timelines. A team should compare data policies and its own consent obligations for the entire site, not assume one analytics setting decides them.

These products do not offer the same session evidence. Vercel defines sessions for aggregate reporting, while Clics documents individual visit timelines. Plausible offers user journeys. None of those descriptions is session replay. If watching a recording of a visitor's interface is a requirement, choose a product with documented replay rather than relabeling a timeline as one.

AI referrals

AI referrals are human visits arriving with a recognizable referrer from an AI assistant. Plausible now documents an AI Assistants channel, where a team can examine sources, landing pages, and goals. It deserves credit for that capability. Vercel documents referrer panels, but the Web Analytics pages reviewed do not establish a dedicated AI-assistant view.

Clics has a dedicated AI Analytics view with provider tabs, landing pages, UTM detail, and custom events from those visits. Its AI view does not expose every Overview filter, including Goal. All referrer-based tools miss some visits when the referrer is stripped or the person arrives directly, and none identifies an exact AI model version from that signal.

AI crawlers

AI crawlers are automated requests. They are not the human referrals above. Vercel says Web Analytics excludes automated traffic using the user agent. The Plausible pages reviewed do not document a verified AI crawler request dashboard. Neither statement establishes that a team cannot analyze separate infrastructure logs.

Clics documents server-side crawler tracking. It verifies a supported crawler by matching both user agent and source IP to the operator's published identity, then reports requested pages. A response-aware integration can include HTTP status; request-only setup cannot. The server package and project-scoped crawler token are separate from the browser script. A crawler request does not prove indexing or citation. AI crawler tracking is free for all Clics users; crawler requests do not count as consumed events.

Access and price

Vercel's event limits and reporting windows vary by plan, with custom events and UTM reporting gated as noted above. Plausible pricing depends on its Cloud tier or the cost of self-hosting and maintaining Community Edition. Clics charges by pageview and custom-event volume.

Plausible documents APIs and a third-party MCP route. Clics documents REST API, TypeScript SDK, CLI, and MCP. Agent access is therefore a practical integration criterion, not an exclusive claim. Clics also documents a dedicated AI crawler analytics endpoint alongside its general stats API.

Final verdict

Choose Vercel Web Analytics when tight integration with Vercel projects, deployment reporting, and feature flag usage are the firm requirements and its plan limits fit. Choose Plausible when a portable, readable acquisition and conversion dashboard or its self-hosted edition fits the team. For complete managed website analytics without those dependencies, choose Clics. Its documented events, goals, revenue, funnels, and session timelines cover the core job, while its dedicated AI referral view and separately installed verified crawler tracking extend the same product.
