This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine ## What I Built Marigold Memory is a small remembrance-writing companion inspired by Día de los Muertos. It helps you gather someone's name, the things they loved, and one story you want to keep, then shapes those details into a tribute you can edit. It is deliberately a writing aid, not a séance. It never claims to contact or speak for the person you remember. The person brings the memory; the model helps with phrasing. ## Demo Run it on your own computer using the setup steps below. There is no hosted demo: keeping family stories off a server is part of the design. ## Code Public repository: https://github.com/meaniketrai-design/marigold-memory ## How I Built It The app uses a dependency-free Python server and a plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript interface. The server sends the story details to Ollama at 127.0.0.1, where Qwen2.5 1.5B Instruct runs locally. Remembrances are saved to a local JSON file only when you choose “Keep on this computer.” To run it, install Ollama. In one terminal, download the model and start the local service:
sh ollama pull qwen2.5:1.5b-instruct ollama serve
In another terminal, run python server.py, then open http://127.0.0.1:8000. After the one-time model download, writing works offline. The app code is MIT licensed; the model is Apache 2.0 licensed. ## Why Does Open Innovation Matter? A remembrance can include intimate family history. Local inference lets the writing happen without sending those stories to a service the family does not control. After downloading the model, the app can work without internet, and the model can be swapped as needs change. The family keeps control of where the words live. A small local model can still phrase something awkwardly or infer too much, so every result is editable and should be reviewed. Here, openness made privacy and independence practical in a way a hosted API would not. ## The Spirit of It Sometimes what keeps someone close is an ordinary detail: the song in the kitchen, the dish they brought to every gathering, or the saying everyone still repeats. Marigold Memory is a small place to keep those details in the family's hands. ## Prize Categories No partner prize categories entered.
