I Sampled TikTok's 10 Most-Liked Videos. They Come in Exactly Two Lengths.
TikTok doesn't hand you a clean "trending" endpoint the way some platforms do, so I sampled the recommendation feed across a few dozen regions on the morning of October 7, 2026 — 261 videos, sorted by likes — took the top ten, and then sorted them by duration instead of popularity.
The list stopped behaving like a list.
Five of the ten most-liked videos run fifteen seconds or shorter. Three run longer than four minutes. Between sixteen seconds and four minutes there are exactly two entries.
Seven seconds, seven seconds, nine seconds, twelve seconds, fifteen seconds. Then: twenty-eight seconds, fifty seconds. Then: four minutes, six minutes forty-nine, seven minutes ten.
Nothing sits in the middle. And the longest video in the top ten has the highest view count of the ten.
The short end
The seven-second clips. One is a sunset with a caption of two hashtags, 6.2M plays. The other is a motorsport clip, 3.4M.

Nine seconds, 5.1M plays, a caption naming a specific year — a private reference rather than a general mood.

Twelve seconds, 5.3M plays, an account that makes physical sculptures. A finished object reads in about a second and a half; the rest is payoff.

Fifteen seconds, 2.9M plays, a corner-shop owner with a drink in his hand.

The long end
The fifty-second entry drew 23M plays — the second-highest figure in the top ten, from a clip that runs more than three times longer than anything in the short cluster.

The four-minute entry drew 33.9M plays, the highest of all ten.

Two more above four minutes, at 6:49 and 7:10, with 8.3M and 5.4M plays respectively.

What the shape means
The usual advice — keep it short, the feed rewards brevity — describes the short cluster accurately and explains none of the long one. Three of the ten most-liked videos in this sample are longer than four minutes, and one of them is the single most-played entry on the list.
The middle is what's missing. Twenty to ninety seconds is where the sample goes quiet. Which suggests the real constraint is not length but whether the format fits the length. A seven-second clip and a seven-minute clip can both hold someone. A forty-second clip that should have been fifteen cannot.
Method
TikTok serves the recommendation feed per-region; I pulled a few dozen regional slices, merged them, and kept the 261 highest-liked videos sampled that morning. Counts are as displayed when each was pulled, not weekly totals. The ranking rotates continuously, so treat this as a snapshot of what was being pushed that morning, not a stable leaderboard.
If you want to run the same pull and check the duration split yourself, the full sample with per-video notes is here: https://clipdocky.com/
