Golden-Week launch wave: BEV, PHEV and EREV all in play as China's EV market heads into Q4 2026.

China's new-energy vehicle (NEV) sector rolled into the National Day holiday with a dense launch calendar. From Li Auto's first full-size pure-electric SUV to BYD ticking past 10 million vehicles and BMW reinventing its core 3 Series as a twin fuel-plus-EV architecture, the first day of October shows how broad the electrified mix has become — battery-electric, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and extended-range (EREV) all shipping volume.

China's booming new-energy vehicle market

1. Li Auto i6 opens pre-sale on Oct 1 — its first large pure-electric SUV

Li Auto opened pre-sales for the i6 on October 1. Positioned as the brand's first large (mid-to-full-size) pure-electric SUV, the i6 is built on an 800V architecture with 5C ultra-fast charging — a notable pivot for a company that built its reputation on EREV range-extenders. Final pricing will be confirmed at launch. The move extends Li Auto's "dual powertrain" strategy: it keeps EREV flagships (L-series) while pushing BEV volume through the i-series (i6, i8). For overseas readers, it signals that China's most profitable NEV startup now treats pure BEV as a core front, not an experiment.

2. BYD Da Han marks the Dynasty line's 10-millionth vehicle; launches Oct 13

On September 29 BYD's Dynasty network confirmed the Da Han flagship sedan as the series' 10-millionth vehicle off the line. The all-electric version is already in pre-sale and will officially launch on October 13; final pricing to be confirmed at launch. Key specs already disclosed: a 5,256 mm body, 0.197 Cd drag, a second-generation Blade battery of about 102 kWh, CLTC range up to ~1,008 km, 800V-class flash charging (10%–97% in roughly 9 minutes), and air suspension with rear-wheel steering. A 1.5T PHEV variant is planned with ~370 km of pure-electric range — keeping PHEV squarely in BYD's flagship mix. The Da Han directly targets the D+/E-segment sedan space (SU7, Voyah, Audi A6L, Mercedes E-Class).

3. Aito M8 refreshed opens pre-sale (Sept 30) with Huawei ADS 5 standard

Seres and Huawei reshaped their partnership this week, and the refreshed Aito M8 opened pre-sales on September 30 as the first fruit of the new arrangement. Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5 is standard across the lineup; the battery-electric version offers up to ~830 km CLTC. As an EREV/BEV dual-purpose model, the M8 keeps the extended-range formula that made Aito a volume player while leaning harder on Huawei's driver-assistance stack. Pricing to be confirmed at launch.

4. NIO launches the all-new ES8 (Sept 30)

NIO launched the all-new ES8 on September 30 — a full redesign of its three-row flagship SUV. The update targets seating comfort, smart-cabin experience and chassis control, while retaining NIO's battery-swap proposition and flexible battery-as-a-service subscriptions. No specific price was confirmed in the launch materials reviewed. The ES8 refresh matters because it defends NIO's premium-bev position against a wave of cheaper large SUVs from Li Auto, BYD and Huawei-backed brands.

5. BMW debuts the 8th-gen 3 Series — first time fuel and EV sell side by side

On September 30 BMW globally unveiled the eighth-generation 3 Series, and for the first time in the nameplate's 54-year history it sells fuel and fully electric versions in the same generation. The EV, the i3, rides on the Neue Klasse / NCAR architecture built in Munich: the i3 50 xDrive makes 469 hp, claims up to 911 km WLTP, and supports 400 kW DC charging; UK pricing starts around £53,425 (approx. $72,000 USD), with the fuel G50 range (320 and M350 xDrive) from £44,975. The Chinese long-wheelbase version and local pricing are yet to be announced. This is the clearest signal yet that even Germany's most driver-focused nameplate is going electric-first while keeping combustion for buyers who want it.

6. Seven ministries issue the "15th Five-Year" new-battery plan

On September 28–29, seven Chinese ministries (led by MIIT) published the country's first national-level dedicated battery plan — the New Battery Industry Development "15th Five-Year" Plan. Headline targets: solid-state batteries reach initial scaled application by 2030, battery cells rated for ~15,000 charge cycles, and defect rates driven to PPB (parts-per-billion) levels. The plan explicitly backs consolidation across the supply chain. For buyers, the practical read is longer-lived packs and more standardized battery-health data for the used-EV market; for the industry, it raises the bar on safety and quality just as price wars peak.

7. XPeng sells carbon credits to Porsche — China's compliance assets go global

XPeng confirmed (September 29) that it is selling carbon credits to Porsche and several other international automakers, covering the EU, UK and Australia, with cumulative transaction value expected to exceed ¥1 billion (approx. $140 million USD). The deals run about two years. The signal is bigger than the money: Chinese EVs' overseas sales are now generating a second, compliance-driven revenue stream. It also slightly eases price pressure on European joint-venture EVs, since brands can buy credits to offset combustion/performance-line emissions.

8. September NEV retail hits 827,000 in first 27 days (65.7% of the market)

Per CnEVPost (Sept 30), China's NEV retail sales reached 827,000 units in September 1–27, accounting for 65.7% of passenger-car sales — a record penetration share. Multiple brands reported record monthly deliveries: BYD's September wholesale was about 396,000 units (AASTOCKS), while several makers (Li Auto, Leapmotor, Zeekr, NIO, Xiaomi) posted all-time-high monthly figures. The Golden-Week holiday traditionally lifts showroom traffic, setting up a strong Q4 close.
