China's "Crazy Wednesday": Six Debuts Hit the Market on Sept 16 as NEV Penetration Tops 57%

China's car market delivered its busiest single launch day of the "Golden September" sales season on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. At least five new models went on sale and one opened presales, while Leapmotor staged a separate tech event — and the wave landed as monthly NEV retail penetration crossed 57.8%. As we flagged in our Sept 14 preview, most of these models hit the market exactly on schedule; here is the confirmed rundown.

The Sept 16 launch wave at a glance

Automotive media dubbed it "Crazy Wednesday." Li Auto, Mercedes-Benz, Arcfox, Fangchengbao and Hongqi all staged events on the same evening, with launches clustered around 19:00–19:30 Beijing time. The common thread: Huawei- or BYD-backed intelligent driving, long-range EREV/BEV powertrains, and aggressive pricing that pushes formerly premium features (LiDAR, 800V, magnetic suspension) into the mass market.

China NEV launch wave Sept 16 2026

Li Auto i9 — pure-electric flagship SUV (BEV)

Li Auto unveiled the i9 at 19:30 on Sept 16 as its first pure-electric flagship SUV, offered in a single fully-loaded "Home" version. Confirmed specs: 5,225 mm long with a 3,168 mm wheelbase, a 101 kWh 5C ternary battery, 705 km CLTC range, 800V architecture (10 minutes adds ~400 km), dual-motor AWD at 400 kW, 0–100 km/h in 4.9 s, four zero-gravity seats with a 180° rotating second row, steer-by-wire plus rear-wheel steering (5.3 m turning radius), and Li Auto's in-house Mach M100 chip (2,560 TOPS) with an optional four-LiDAR package. Final pricing was announced on stage; pre-launch Chinese-media estimates ranged widely (roughly ¥370,000–¥600,000), so we await the official figure to confirm rather than risk an error.

Arcfox αT7 — Huawei-powered, BEV + EREV (presale)

BAIC's Arcfox opened presales for the αT7 at a subsidized price of ¥137,800–174,800 (approx. $19,000–$24,400 USD, indicative), with nine trims. It is offered in both battery-electric (rear-drive 218 kW, AWD 360 kW) and range-extended forms (1.5T extender + single motor, 270 kW system output, ~5.8 L/100 km WLTC drained-battery consumption). Every variant ships Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 Pro with a hidden LiDAR, a 1.1 m panoramic PHUD, and dual on-board AI agents (Alibaba Qwen and ByteDance Doubao). Arcfox reported over 30,000 pre-orders within 72 hours of opening presale in late August, per official data cited by Autohome.

Fangchengbao S & S GT — BYD performance sedans (presale, BEV)

BYD's Fangchengbao brand opened presales for the S sedan and S GT shooting brake at ¥230,000–280,000 (approx. $32,200–$39,200 USD, indicative). The S is a three-box coupe; the S GT adds a 21° shooting-brake tail. Both share a platform with 245/300 kW RWD or 490 kW AWD, 76.7/92.1 kWh batteries, up to 900 km CLTC range, 800V flash-charging and DiSus-M magnetic suspension. The pair extends BYD's "one platform, multiple forms" strategy to undercut similarly spec'd European performance sedans.

Hongqi H7 PHEV — premium plug-in sedan (presale)

FAW Hongqi opened presales for the H7 PHEV at a limited-time subsidized ¥181,800–221,800 (approx. $25,400–$31,000 USD, indicative; standard presale ¥191,800–231,800). The 1.5T plug-in hybrid delivers 240 km CLTC electric range (two-wheel drive) and 1,954 km combined range, with 4.4 L/100 km drained-battery consumption; the AWD version makes 476 kW and hits 0–100 km/h in 3.9 s. It is the first Hongqi to carry the in-house "Sinan" city NOA system and marks the brand's push into intelligent, tech-forward sedans.

Mercedes-Benz GLE LWB — the lone mild-hybrid luxury counterpunch

Not every debut was a plug-in. Beijing Benz launched the long-wheelbase GLE at official prices of ¥599,800–767,800 (approx. $83,900–$107,400 USD, indicative) across four trims — a 2.0T and 3.0T inline-six, both with 48V mild-hybrid assist and 4MATIC AWD. It stretches the wheelbase to 3,115 mm (longer than the BMW X5 L), packs a triple-12.3-inch "superscreen," the Doubao AI assistant and Momenta's R6/R7 driving models. As the only non-plug-in in the day's wave, it signals how traditional luxury is fighting back with localization and software rather than electrification.

Leapmotor debuts its "world model" ADAS

Rather than a new model, Leapmotor held a tech event at 19:00 showcasing its self-developed "world model" assisted-driving system with live test drives. The move underscores how Chinese brands are shifting the competitive battleground from hardware specs to end-to-end driving software.

Market data: NEV penetration hits 57.8% in September

The launches landed as the passenger-car NEV retail penetration reached 57.8% in September (about 1.296 million units, +15.5% YoY), per the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data reported by industry outlets — a fresh record that confirms the "oil-to-electric" reversal is now structural, not a trend.

Exports: NEV shipments up 134.6% in August

On the global front, China's NEV exports hit 526,000 units in August, up 134.6% YoY, accounting for more than half of all auto exports for the third straight month; January–August NEV exports reached 3.435 million, +124.3% YoY, per CAAM. Europe-bound PHEV registrations surged roughly 270% in the first five months, exploiting the lower 10% tariff still applied to plug-in hybrids versus ~27% on pure EVs.

BYD's flash-charge network tops 10,000 stations

BYD confirmed its "flash-charge China" network passed 10,000 stations on Aug 28, covering 332 cities with peak 1,500 kW (up to 2,100 kW at highway demo sites) and ~1.83 million users, about a third from other brands. The build-out — from 4,239 to 10,000 stations in roughly five months — is becoming a hard-to-copy infrastructure moat as rivals trim their own charging footprints.
