The Docker Dependency Problem No One Talks About (But Everyone Feels)

Docker is often described as the solution to “it works on my machine.” And to be fair, it really does solve a lot of pain.

But after years of using it in real-world systems, I’ve noticed something: Docker doesn’t remove problems—it reshapes them into dependency relationships that are harder to see, debug, and sometimes even understand.


1. “It works on my machine” didn’t disappear—it moved into containers

Before Docker:

  • “It works on my machine” meant environment mismatch

After Docker:

  • “It works in my container” still doesn’t mean it works in production

Now the mismatch becomes:

  • base image differences
  • missing system libraries
  • subtle kernel behavior differences
  • architecture mismatches (amd64 vs arm64 pain is real)

We didn’t eliminate inconsistency—we encapsulated it.


2. The hidden dependency chain inside images

A Docker image looks clean and self-contained.

But inside it:

  • Debian/Alpine/Ubuntu version matters
  • libc version silently affects everything
  • OpenSSL versions break authentication in production
  • Python/Node base image tags quietly shift over time

Your “simple container” is actually:

a deep dependency tree frozen at a moment in time

And when something breaks, you’re debugging layers inside layers.


3. Docker caching: the illusion of speed

Docker build cache feels like magic:

  • fast builds
  • reused layers
  • instant feedback

Until it doesn’t work.

Then you discover:

  • cache invalidation is unpredictable
  • small Dockerfile changes break unrelated layers
  • “no cache” builds suddenly behave differently

At that point, debugging feels less like engineering and more like archaeology.


4. Microservices + Docker = distributed confusion

Docker makes it easy to spin up services.

Too easy.

Soon you have:

  • 12 containers running locally
  • service A depends on B which depends on C
  • environment variables passed through 3 layers
  • docker-compose files that look like spaghetti architecture diagrams

Now debugging is not about one system—it’s about reconstructing a living network of dependencies.


5. The real Docker problem: reproducibility vs understanding

Docker’s biggest promise is reproducibility.

And it delivers—but with a tradeoff:

  • You get identical environments
  • But you often lose visibility into why something works

Everything becomes:

“It runs, so don’t touch it”

That mindset slowly shifts engineering culture from understanding systems to trusting artifacts.


Final thought

Docker is not the villain.

It’s a mirror.

It reflects the complexity we already had:

  • dependency chains
  • environment drift
  • hidden coupling between services

But it also hides it just well enough that we forget it’s there—until something breaks at 2 AM.

And maybe that’s the real lesson:

Modern IT didn’t eliminate complexity.

It just learned how to package it.
